I was pretty nervous about it, especially since it's red and no way to even try to blend that in. The ones I have seen that are a more natural color look allot better. There was a thread on this, I started and I think Mandofiddle posted a pictue of his and it looks much better ,it's not as schocking.

I bought a fiddle on EBay a few months ago and had some concern when I saw the pictures of the unfinished neck. I thought it was a sign of how cheap the fiddle was. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I did some research and learned that this was SOP. I also found, once the fiddle arrived, that it didn't look as jarring in person as it did in the photos. I imagine this might be the case with your mandolin as well.

Is it possible to stain it before oiling so it matches?

No unfortunatley it is pretty butt ugly even in person and it just glares at you, but fortunatley its on the back.

Bill James, I don't know if that's possible or not, without making it sticky again? Maybe someone out ther can answere that?

No wonder this mandolin looks so embarrassed. Wouldn't you if you had your picture on the net with something that looked like that on your nekkid neck?

Christine W

That was there, my handy work had nothing to do with it. I think thats the least of my worries.:D

I wasn't refering to your handy work. I just thought it looked funny.
My sense of humor doesn't go over too well in person sometimes either.

I wasn't offended. It is difficult to convey sence of humor over this thing. I thought your comment was funny and very observant. You guys don't miss a thing. That's great:D http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif and one of the main reasons I keep comming back.

Christy: #I've had the finished professionally removed on several mandolin necks and then stain applied to try and match the original finish. #Then, I use walnut oil once in a while instead of tung oil. #Seems like the walnut oil is not sticky or tacky. #I had the varnish removed from the back of the neck on my Phoenix Bluegrass and then restained and you really can't even tell the finish was removed unless you look up close at the instrument. #I sure like the feel of the neck with the finish removed, especially here in Kansas during the summer months when the humidty is soooo high.

Good luck!
