"News from the Russian front" as it were (courtesy of our dear and esteemed Mme. Tamara Volskaya):

Last April, Ms. Yelena Zabavskaya, a soloist of the Radio and TV Russian folk instruments State Orchestra( Moscow), won first prize (on mandolin ) at the sixth "Cup of the North" international contest held in the city of Cherepovets (Russia).

As her work of choice for the first round of the contest, she performed
Diferencias (http://www.paperclipdesign.com/vk/) by Yours Truly. (The score is available as a free download on the website above.)

I am delighted, and not a little relieved to see that Russian virtuosi, with their legendary technical prowess, have been using this piece as their warhorse for some time now: delighted, as this is the sincerest compliment a performer can pay a composer; relieved, because I feel better about my own, measly skills. If they use it to show off their considerable arsenal, its perfectly OK for me to still struggle with it. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Most of all, of course, I am thrilled that Yelena evidently knocked everybody's socks off with her performance of this piece. I am told by reliable sources #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif that Russian master-pickers play it at lightning speed, dazzling their audiences with their impeccable string-crossings and cross-pickings. I will stick to, ah... molto moderato in my own efforts.

Brava!
