well, I did a stupid thing and taped a playlist to my old gibson A mando. now, a week later, the residue of the cheap 'non-Scotch' (sorry, 3M) tape won't come off. Can any one recommend how to get this off without damaging the finish ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Is it an old (teens/twenties) Gibson with a shellac finish or a newer one with Lacquer?
Either way, a rag dampened with naptha should be pretty safe. It's always a good idea to test in an "inconspicuous place" first.
Keep alcohol away from shellac, and any high solvency solvents (acetone, etc.) away from lacquer.

I just read this yesterday, I don't know how well it would work but I think it would be the safest thing to try...MAYONNAISE,
It is supposed to remove that sticky stuff left from price tags

Sunburst, I hope Sailaway realizes your little tag at the end is on all of your posts.

For the future: 3M makes "Photo and Document Tape," which is advertised to be acid free and completely removeable with no residue. I have used it to tape set lists to my mando and so far it has worked as advertised.

well, thanks for all the suggestions ! I will go with the mayo and some olive oil (without garlic) before bringing out the big gun ' naptha' , this is an old pumpkin color A- model early Gibson #15980 with a shiny ?shellac ? finish ( isn't that made of dead bugs or something / ) -- and i do appreciate the reference to hiding one's intelligence and/or stupidity -- i have made my fair share of woodworking mistakes in my day and believe the best thing is to confess errors promptly so others won't repeat them.. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

This method (mayonaise) is recommended by Earl Proulx of Yankee magazine. I've used it a number of times and it works nicely, very easy on the surface being cleaned. Be sure to use real mayonaise, not Miracle Whip or something similar.

.....and if all else fails......throw it between a couple slices of rye with some tomato and lettuce and ya got yerself a mando-club sandwhich? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif #Yummmmm
I was told to put it in my hair (when I started losing it years ago) to help make it fuller. #Didn't work.

If you use WD-40 you may want to spray some on a cloth and let the aerosols evaporate off for a minute or so before applying to the mando.

If the Mayo or WD40 don't work you might try something called Goo Gone. Dont remember where I bought it or how much it cost, but it's made from orange oil or some other citrus stuff. I've used it to remove tough stuck-on stickers that home centers like to put on every pc of wood. It also works good at getting glue off chisels & plane irons for the times when you go after glue squeeze out before it's completely hardened. Acetone works good for that too, but I wouldn't want to try that on a mando's finish.
