I talked to Joe yesterday and I believe he posted elsewhere that Gibson has official established a memorial fund in Charlie's name, with funds contributed going directly to Charlie's immediate family. This is one way we can all support his memory and this ost is simply to encourage everyone here to lend a helping hand. I asked Joe if online donations might be possible and he said he'll check with Gibson corporate on Monday to see if that will be possible at some point. Otherwise, checks can be sent to:

EDIT: 9/2/2006 - appears Gibson has removed information about Charlie's passing and the memorial fund set up on his behalf so I'm removing my link to it as well and will direct future memorial opportunities to another fund set up by friends and family.

Yes it seems like a very small favor to do for a guy like Charlie. I'm definitely donating.

I recently sold a Gibson A9 via the cafe classified. Normally I would make a donation to the cafe, but it seems fitting that the donation this time goes to Charlie's family.

Knowing the kind of guy that Scott is, I don't think he'll mind.

I'm going to list a Mark Leaf Deluxe mandolin case for sale on the classifieds later today...All procedes will be going to the memorial fund for Charlies' family.
If you've ever wanted one of these cases please buy this one!
Thanks,
Richie Kalikow

Richie, that is a truely generous gesture. I would just like to say that I have two Caltons, one Pegasus, and three Mark Leafs. I personally like the Mark Leafs best of all. Not only is this a chance, like you said, for someone to get a great case that rarely ever comes up for sale, but also a wonderful opportunity to be part this tremendous outpouring of generosity and support.

Since people are still seeing this page, I guess it's my obligation to point out Gibson has already removed the news article about Charlie's passing. At first I thought this in error but I'm unable to find any mention of him on their site. Maybe they do this with all news articles. Maybe not. In addition, I noticed whoever posted the original article had his name spelled as Darr instead of Derr. Someone, please, prove me wrong on all or parts of this so I can offer an apology for making this observation in error.

On Monday there will finally be a way to send online donations to a fund set up in Charlie's name that will benefit his family directly. You'll be seeing plenty about it. This was set up by friends or Charlie's and we intend to support it in an energetic fashion.

What a strange world Gibson corporate can be.

It's hard sometimes, but you have to remember that corporations are impersonal sometimes because they aren't persons. A news item ages a certain number of days and they roll it off (I am giving them a benefit of a doubt here, but I bet this is pretty accurate). If someone notices, maybe an exception is made. But the people handling the web and the people in daily work at OAI are different groups.

Very sad.
You would think that Charlies' contribution to the good fortunes of the Gibson corporation would stay in the forefront of the minds of someone in a position of power at Gibson and that if EVER there was a case for an exception that this would be it.
Someone has really dropped the ball here.
Very strange and very dissapointing.

Gibson must have figured a month was long enough, kinda like flying the flag at half mast for a month.
