a few years back 1995 ish , i saw an amazing mandolin player at Samois the gypsy jazz festival near paris, he was there not as a performer but in the jams etc, anyone know who he was. he was American, big bloke, black hair , beard, played like a demon and could play just about anything from bluegrass to Django.

1995? My first thought would be Dave Peters, especially since he spent so much time around gypsy jazz.

Almost certainly Dave Peters. He made several trips there to my knowledge. Here are a couple of pictures of him.

Hey Scott - Who else is in that picture with Dave Peters, if you know? He was local to Houston and I hear a lot about him. Just curious who else he was playing with?

I'm going to take a guess that the banjo player is Chris Hirsch. The rest aren't familiar.

I don't know who those players are in the picture with Dave. Someone from that part of the country will hopefully be able to help us out.

Dave has a nice CD called Art In America. Only place I know selling it is Mid-Continent Music (http://midcontinentmusic.com/detail.cfm?Catalogid=1571) and you'd better hurry because he's going out of business at the moment but trying to get rid of his inventory first. BTW, it's a very, very good recording.

Actually, I do know the fiddle player although I haven't seen him in years. Here's the archive for the picture above (http://lonestarbluegrassband.com/archives.htm) in case you want to identify those band members.

I spent a little time trying to google my own answer. I'm guessing it's an earlier incarnation of the Lone Star Bluegrass Band (http://www.lonestarbluegrassband.com/).

Ooops - I see you beat me to that conclusion.
