Some mando content, given his work with Dawg...
Today Jerry Garcia would have turned 64. Sad to think about what could have been if he were able to divorce himself from the Grateful Dead machine and spend more time playing bluegrass, which he loved. Being the appointed leader of such a movement is a heavy burden. Gonna be running the "All things Jerry" playlist on iTunes today... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
Play on, big guy...

I totally missed this yesterday. My girlfriend went to a Jerry B-Day party with a few cover bands. A big reason why I play the mandolin is becasue Jerry Garcia's various musical interests. Jerry, thanks for the happiness.
i was thinking about jerry on his b'day. i certainly wouldn't have been introduced to the mandolin in anyway that made me want to try it without the jerry-david connection. jerry/the dead, had a profound effect on my youth and who i became as an adult, and certainly pushed and pulled my musical sensibility in everywhich we.
thanks jerry-you are missed!

Jerry's music is alive and well. It was great seeing the Phil lesh and friends line up at the Warfield this past May. They rocked the house and played lots of great songs. There will be a dvd of these killer shows released in late fall.

BUMP to say http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
11 years ago today I was working at a large IP law firm in DC. I heard the news at lunchtime. I got stuck working late, and as a result got to use the car service the firm used to take me home to Gaithersburg. I asked the driver to spin past the Washington Monument, where a vigil was being held for Jerry.

TeleMark - on the lighter side, that drawing of Garcia you posted to open the thread is simply outstanding!
This being a Jerry time of year, I've recently downloaded a Garcia/John Kahn show from the mid 80's (Bushnell, Hartford, CT). An acoustic guitar, vocals and bass. Nice! Me backing up Deep Elem Blues on mando? Well, let's just say if I were on stage that night, I'd be turned down in the mix. Good fun, though.
Cheers.

That sounds like a great show. Where did you find it? I may go fishing for it later, from home.
