hi,
one of my mandolins is from the brand Stagg (very unknown), it's a low budget mandolin, but it plays well.
The strings it came with were 0.010 to 0.032 (very thin!).
Now, would it cause trouble if I set up a thicker set of strings (0.011-0.039), knowing that I can't adjust the neck tension (no thusrod in this mandolin).
thanks,
kenneth

Is this a bowlback or an arch top? If a bowl stick with lighter guages. If an archtop (my johnson laminated no truss rod cheap-o included) uses J-74s. If the neck joins tht body at the 12 fret you have even less to worry about if it's not a bowl back.

it's not a bowlback. And the neck joins the body at the 12fret, so probably it's not a problem?
thanks!

I'm not a big fan of putting heavy strings on every mandolin just to do it. About all you gain is a little better bass, and bass isn't exactly a mandolin's strong suit under the best of conditions. #Well-built arch-tops normally will take the heavier strings and sound best with them. But not every arch-top mandolin on the lower end will bear the added tension on the neck and the top.

Since it came with strings that light, I'd suggest nothing heavier than d'Addario J62's or Martin M400's. #Even those are heavier than what you have now.
