picks are as varied as strings and mandolins. You will have to find the best combination that gives you the sound and feel you like. That being said, I have been using Dunlop Gator Grips in different sizes depending on my combinations at the time. Have fun with the picks and strings, a cheap way to really get different sounds out of the same mandolin. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Probably 25 threads on this alone... I've moved over to a Golden Gate, and it's made a huge difference in my sound. I really think that the stiff picks give you a meatier chop chord tone, since there's no flex in the pick. It's taking some practice to regain my volume in single-note playing (rounded tip doesn't dig in the way a pointy pick does), but it seems worth the effort.

Again, it's what you're looking for in the sound that matters. If you're playing classical or Celtic, this might not be the tone you want to have.

Picks are (mostly) cheap. Buy a bunch and experiment. Just give yourself enough time to work through the differences in the picks to really judge.

my favorite definetly have to be Dawgs, i like them beacuse they have a lot of "personality" ive used many other picks and some make less pick noise, or are faster and what not but i keep going back to my old dawg. but for a bluegrass chop nothing beats real hawksbill. but thats only for bluegrass, for jazz i like to use either a wegen guitar or a dunlop big stubby, and for classical i use a homemade (russian design) teflon pick that makes absolutly NO pick noise, but everything changes with the mandolin.
