Welcome PhilC, I've been curious about TC for some time too.

I had a chance to play a Turkey Creek Mandolin this past summer in Telluride. Brad Van Loenen makes these in Morrison, Colorado. The Mandolin I played had a nice woody tone and a decent chop. Fit and finsh was good. The neck seemed on the small side to me compared to my Yellowstone. Comfortable to play though. If I remember correctly, it was selling new for under $2,000.00 Nice looking flamed Maple on the sides, back and neck. The fret position markers were rectangles - not dots. Looked nice. If you call the music shop in Telluride, they could likely give you plenty of info on the Mandolins and builder.

I think the store was this one:
Telluride Music Company

thanks for the info - i may just give them a call. i have decided to get back to playing after many years and it seems the mandolin market has many new small builders. i am trying to find a good handmade insrument for under $3K and i came across Brad's site. i was intrigued by his mandolins but am trying to find some opinions on how they sound and play. phil

Phil,
I have one word for you...Pomeroy! Don builds fantastic mandolins. I have ##31 (F4) and it is wonderful. A few people have said that it is the best oval hole they have ever heard. Don's F5's are also killer. You can get his "festival" F5 for around $2500.
Check out Don's website...http://www.pomeroyinstruments.com
Good luck in your search.
