View Full Version : Pickin'On Zeppellin

My brother-in-law got me the CD for my birthday and I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard the Iron Horse stuff, which is cute, but I really find the Pickin'On stuff quite listenable. The Zep music holds up pretty well as acoutic instrumental BG. Maybe I'm just another aging boomer, but I like it... not as a funny novelty. I even put it on my ipod. Viva experimentation and cross-pollination.

The previews do sound interesting. I love the crossover/tribute stuff when it isn't too cheesy. A lot of Southern Rock makes the transition pretty easily. I was at a jam one night when another mando player did "Call Me the Breeze" and it sounded really good.

I know what you mean. The Iron Horse version of The Immigrant song is a bit much. Don't get me wrong, it's a hoot, and it was a great idea to experiment with it. But it doesn't stand on its own feet like Pickin'On's version of Black Dog.

Santiago,
I would also recommend the Metalica tribute CD Fade to Bluegrass and the Ozzy Osbourne/ Black Sabbath tribute CD Black and Bluegrass both from Ironhorse. #
I do not yet have the Zepplin CD but from what I understand, it's a must get.
Thank you for sharing #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
If you just like weird Zep, I can heartily recommend "The Song Retains the Name" volumes 1 and 2. My favorites include a medley of "Misty Mountain Hop" and "The Elephant Walk", Helen Keller Plaid's renditions of "The Immmigrant Song" and "Out on the Tiles", and 4 Sticks version of "In the Evening."
Another one is "Living, Loving, Played", which consists of female vocalists doing acoustic renditions of Led Zeppelin songs. Any of those could form the basis of a mandolin arrangement.
House of Blues' "Led Zeppelin All Bluesed Up" is good, and contains a great version of "Bring it on Home."
And of course, everything that Dread Zeppelin has ever recorded.

Actually, Randy Jackson (of Zebra fame) just performed an evening of Led Zeppellin music with the Long Island Philharmonic Orchestra here. I missed it, but I heard it was pretty good. I remember hearing Zebra playing in local bars when I was a kid. Back then they were a Zeppellin cover band (a la Heart) and I remember being impressed that they could play the guitar parts as well as Paige -- probably better than I saw him do in concert.

Santiago,
You said it!!! Randy Jackson is one awesome musician and songwriter.
The "¿Who's behind the door?" video was shot about 80 miles north of where I live at White Sands National Monument. (http://www.nps.gov/whsa/)
Zebra was a big part of my life in the 80's as well as today.

Randy Jackson's been playing all over Long Island lately. I thought I heard a commercial for a Zebra date too, but I was out of town last week so I don't remember when or where or if.

BTW, Hayseed Dixie is very taper friendly and you can hear a bunch at etree (my favorite way is to use the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/index.php)).
Just keep in mind that Hayseed Dixie are some good old Southern boys that speak and sing a little freely about drinking, drugs and women. Not recommended for playing around kids...

The Rain Song is one of my favorite Zep tunes. I forget how much I enjoy Led Zepellin. Happen to hear them playing on an XM channel last night, and couldnt change the channel. It was the jam medley from The Song Remains the Same, I believe. Great stuff. Gotta get my CDs out again.

I was working on "Gimme 3 Steps" with a guitar player out in the garage and I brought a CD version for us to play along with a couple of times first. It was a version I got from SoundClick and my buddy said hewas surprised I didn't have the Skynyrd version. I do, but not on garage friendly media...

I listen to Led Zeppelin a lot, but of course being 20, I have their entire collection in mp3 form. I also wrote a solo mandolin instrumental version of Stairway to Heaven...werd.

My ten year old son is suddenly discovering LZ. He's a talented singer, but it's quite funny to hear him recording Zep. songs with Audacity software on the family PC, or singing in the shower for that matter. Neighbors think he's nuts, but if he develops his talent it will pay off when he's a little older -- though his voice should change and it's going to be hard to sing this stuff. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That Pickin' On stuff is great, so is the Iron Horse stuff. #I love hearing varied versions of songs, Weird Al, Johnny Cash doing Soundgarden, etc.
I used to do a 2/4 time version of Stairway just for my own fancy. #And because I grew sick of always playing it for people. #Whenever someone would request it when I was playing, I would make them listen to it that way the whole way through. #Okay, enough of that, here's my Zep question...
Does any one have the mandolin arrangement for "That's The Way"? #I know almost all the other parts, but I'm too lazy to figure it out for myself...

Oh, and another great recording is the Lovemongers (Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart) version of The Battle Of Evermore (mando content) or Rock'n'Roll by Heart. (No mando content)
Just thought I'd put that in.

Hi all,
Don`t know if this relevant, but back in 1995, (Jimmy) Page & (Robert)Plant did a CD together "No Quarter" .
They also toured together, which was awsome, and had a video out of a private gig..I went to see them, and on the DVD released in 2004(?)which i brought to replace my old video, there`s a chap playing said Mandolin on a few studio and "video" tracks. What a combination of String section and Rock music.

Howdy Keith,
No Quarter is one of the best recordings and collection of Zep tunes. #Nice version of the Battle of Evermore.
My cousin on the other side of Texas (800 miles away) saw them in Houston back in '98. #The were touring to support their 2nd album "Walking to Clarksdale".
I'm still sad over missing that show #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I used to know LZ's live sound mixer, the late Donny Kretchmar (not to be confused with record producer Korthchmar). He had the greatest job in the world sitting behind the desk with headphones mixing live Zeppellin tours (and later Skynyrd, so he mixed both Stairway and FreeBird for a living). Nice guy too. I used to beg him for live mix recordings but he knew not to let them out of his hands. Died way too young. Last time I saw him was at the Honeydripper's show at New Jersey's Meadowlands in the mid 80s. Page's live guitar work hasn't been quite the same since he reportedly injured his finger, in a train door.

Found the Tour booklet and still have a T shirt from that tour. The DVD i found in a record (CD?) shop here in Derby UK.The CD "No Quarter" names Jim Sutherland as Mandolin/Bodhran as that player.

Keith,
In my haste to post I totally forgot my manners. My apologies.
¡¡¡Welcome aboard to the Mandolin Cafe!!!
You and I are more or less around the same age so don't be intimidated. I've been at this for over 2 years and I'm still learning the mandolin and to read music.
...but most of all it's the fun that keeps me going.
As for the Unledded video, I remember that VH1 broadcasted a Page & Plant show from No Quarter (more or less about 10 years ago). I remember clearly (and to my surprise) that Jimmy Page was playing the mandolin on the Battle of Evermore.
Does this particular show sound familiar?

Keith,
That sounds like it...Umm dug the tour book,CD,Video and T shirt out! ( sad I know, but you set me off).I totally missed Led Zepp...but even so the two main men can still entertain. The mix of Violins etc on one side of the stage and the other players and the centre group meant the satge had to be big, but even so was packed.Do you want a copy of the video?

The CD "No Quarter" names Jim Sutherland as Mandolin/Bodhran as that player.
IIRC correctly (haven't watched it in awhile), Sutherland plays mando on one of the other songs (not Battle of Evermore), either That's the Way or Gallow's Pole.

Keith,
Now that you mentioned Most High (an awesome tune if I may add), that has to be off of the "Walking into Clarksdale" CD.
This wouldn't be the same as "No Quarter" video? #...or is it a revised edition of "No Quarter" video?

On said "Unledded" DVD/video I wondered at Jimmy Page playing a 3 "headed" beast of a stringed gituar, but when looking closely, the top "head" is double stringed, and seem s to be a built in Mandolin....
The device is very big...any ideas on what it is...if many (if any) others play such a thing?

Yes, it's a triple neck by Andy Manson; mandolin, six-string, and 12-string. John Paul Jones got his first Manson triple neck in 1977 and played it onstage with Zep.<a href="http://www.andymanson.co.uk/newhome.htm" target="_blank">
