i'm
just learning E.M.D. and am having more fun playing the rhythm than lead on it, so far i have a slightly streamlined riff but i can jam on the chords for hours. are there other songs buy him that are like this, easy to pick up and jam with, i'm not to the piont to do real intricate stuff, just some simple jazz progressions or some recommeded listend (be warned i haven't buit my ear up yet so i have a hard time picking up notes buy just listening, if i have the chords i can figure it out.) thanks for any help

Opus 38 is another good one.....sounds like you need to get the Grisman Homespun book & 6 CD's
or if you just want to jam the chords they sell a Dawgtracks CD with a book of chords. Then you
can jam along with Grisman & Mike Marshall on many of the classic Dawg tunes. I sometimes see
them for a good price on EBAY.

I'd like to have the chord progressions to some of Dawg's tunes. My ear just isn't that good to figure out the progressions yet. Would you post the chords for EMD and other jazzy tunes..

Thanks, Steve

I've got EMD nearly the same as you, Jim

Em/C7/Em/C7/Em/C7/A/C7/B7

Not sure it really makes a big difference...just thought I throw in my .02!

Yep it is on Homespun cooper 4205, I bought mine on EBAY for $12.95.....most places.... Homespun themselves, or Elderly it is $19.99 or $18.99.

On EMD try these:

I think on the record it is:
Em7//// C9////
Em7//// C9////
Em7//// C9////
A7//// C7// B7//

Anyone know what the rhythm is for Fish Scale?

SternART

cooper4205.......I think mixin' them up would be fine.
Try 4-2-5 for Em7 and 3-2-5 for the C9, only move one
finger one fret......really gets that Dawg sound. You
need to get the rhythm groove right too....

I hate to be a pain but what do you mean by this comment? #I imagine it has to do with chord substituting. #Thanks

Those are chord code for the frets played on the G/D/A strings to make the 3 note chord.

I would even expand "Fishdawg"s chords to 4-2-5-7 and 3-2-5-6. Really adds tension with the high string. It's all about tension and release.

I've been practicing jazz/swing progressions lately and they are great fun. Can anyone else please submit some of Dawg's chord progressions to his tunes. My ear just can't get em.. How about Pupville or Minor Swing?? Anyone?

Sweet Georgia Brown?

Thanks, S

Steve,
Do you know about http://www.mandozine.com/

There are tablEdit files on there........you can download a free viewer & player, do a search on Grisman & there are lots of his tunes transcribed in notation and tab, you can slow the tunes down, etc. Thousands of tunes on there, download the zip files, or search from Mandozine....all the ones you've listed and for many tunes there are multiple versions, beginner, intermediate, advanced etc. Fiddle tunes, BG, Irish, Jazz.....a lifetime of tunes, chords etc....play along, now go fetch some of those Dawg tunes. I highly recommend getting the Homespun David Grisman book & CD's.....if you're serious, hearing David describe his tunes & teach them is definitely worth the price of admission.

SternART is right, many Dawg tunes in there, one particualr is a fine job Mike S did on Swing 51, and it includes Darol Anger's solo also.

Anyone know what the rhythm is for Fish Scale?

It adds up to 9/4 (that initial repeating figure)- or a bar of 4 and a bar of 5.

Man that Fish Scale is a tough one rhythmically.....Artie Traum tune isn't it?

Fish Scale basically in Em with lots of II V stuff- the next thing after the 9/4 is:

C#m7 F#7 Cm7 F7 Bm7

Em C G D Bm Em (2x)

solos:

C#m7 F#7 (4x)
Bbm7 Eb7 (4x)
Gm7 C7 (4x)
Em7 A7 (4x)

you'll notice the pattern descends like a diminshed chord (3 frets). Veddy clevah...then later they cycle that progression UP from the bottom, Then a big honkin A sus when the melody returns at the end, then Em C G D Bm Em

Coda: Em C G D B major to end.

I never heard Artie's version, but I'd imagine that Dawg and those guys's arrangement is probably thier own. This is one of those tunes kind of in my DNA from my religious conversion upon hearing the 1st DGQ album in 1977. I LOVE playing this for students at Berklee who haven't heard the DGQ or this type of music before- they are often as shaken up as i was when i first heard it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for the discourse, John...hey, disc-course, get it?

I, too, fondly recall the impact that stuff had on me (and everybody). I was in Tucson, Az when that record came out, and a local band - Summerdog - was playing a gig at the warehouse. At their break, they pumped side A of this record over the PA and their mando player at the time (one Jon Ross) played along with Grisman on the heads. I remember it like it was yesterday, but it has been 30 freakin years...it was all new and wonderful.

Hey, I know Jon Ross- if it's the same guy who relocated up thisaway in the 80's- great mando and bass player...

AlanN
Feb-09-2007, 6:50am
Yes, that be him. He was a very hip player then, turned that band (Tom Rozum was mando boy before Jon) onto Dawg stuff.
