O.K... Somebody help me out here...
Did I or did I not see an ad for a mid-70's F-12 pop up in the "classifieds" yesterday about noon and then, by dinnertime, disappear completely??
C'mon, y'all... tell me you saw it, too! Where'd it go??

Yea, I saw the F-12 ad. The selling price was $1,500 and it was described to be in great condition. Don't most F-12's have a squared off fretboard extension? This one had the Florida extension.

..yep..thats what I thought..perhaps it was replaced with a 5 fingerboard....it even looked more like an F5 to me....maybe they advertised it wrong and pulled it..

Good eye, guys! Here's what George Gruhn had to say about the ol' F-12's being converted into "counterfeit" F-5's (from his August, 2003 newsletter):
"...Gibson F-12 mandolins were converted at such a rate that today it is relatively rare to see an unaltered 1950s or 1960s F-12. Many post-World War II F-5s were also converted by reshaping the peghead and adding a new fingerboard and peghead veneer done to the pre-World War II dimensions and ornamental specifications. Tops and backs were regraduated in an attempt to give a sound more equivalent to those of the 1920s. Depending upon the craftsman involved, the workmanship could vary greatly in quality but some were quite good and would require a discerning eye to identify them..."
