I've been using my friends kentucky import while my Rose f5 is being built, but i keep breaking strings - i'm not using light gage , just j74's. Q: are there more durable strings out there that won't break so easy.

I find J74s pretty durable. I have broken a few over the years, but not many and I had to play pretty hard to break those. I would suspect a problem with the instrument. Is it always the same string(s)? Is the break always in the same place? You may have a burr on the tuner, nut bridge or tailpiece.
It's the E and A string..
