I have to replace the tuners on my mandolin, but the worms are above the gears and the only types I can find from stew-mac and first quality are ones that have the worms on the bottom of the gears. Can you tell me where I can find some like mine?

I have had the same problem. I wanted to replace and to upgrade my tuners. I ordered the Schaller tuners from Stew
Mac with the gears above and they would not fit....I think
that Janet Davis Music carries the Schaler F5 tuners with the gears below. There is a link up above the message board
Let me know if you have any luck....I will probably get around to ordering mine again in a few weeks.

Roger Siminoff handles Gotoh tuners and you can get them with the gear either above or below from him.

This agin, You can swap the worm shafts around and put the plates on the other sides. The worms will turn the opposite way than they did before. First exchange the worms from the ends of one plate, and then change the two center shafts. Than do the other plate and you are ready to go. This works for Schaller, Grover, and Waverly but not for Gotoh since the Gotoh machines are staked or peened together and are not easily disassembled.
Schaller makes both types of tuning machines for mandolins. The "worm above gear" version is hard to find though. The difference is in the direction of the worm right vs. left. You can disassemble schaller tuners like Michael said, but you will have to turn them in oposite direction.

Grover also makes both styles of tuners.
