Nice. Spectacular, actually, and I'm convinced the photos don't do it justice.
It probably doesn't sound very good, though, right?

Looks like 10 folks will get to study with Mike at the Mandolin Symposium next week:
Advanced Builders Workshop with Mike Kemnitzer
Participants will need to bring a graduated mandolin top and tone bar blanks. I will bring a variety of tops and tone bar blanks and we will make evaluations of the whole collection. I will demonstrate how I grade/select tone bars and fit how to fit them using traditional violin building technique. Tap tuning of the plates will be discussed. After everyone's tone bars are installed and tuned we will hopefully have time to temporarily glue a few of the tops to one of my test frames to hear how they sound.
I will demonstrate fitting of the neck using a traditional tapered dovetail. My method does not rely on any jigs and allows for a high degree of accuracy. I've used this technique hundreds of times, including the resetting of guitar necks.
A Loar mandolin will be in the classroom for us to document and discuss. Using a variety of methods, we will aim at gaining as much information as possible from the instrument. This exercise should have as much value for those who wish to make reproductions as for those who don't. During the process I will demonstrate techniques for template making, photographing, drafting procedures and countless measuring strategies. As well, we will discuss various aspects of the instrument‚s construction. Everyone can expect to leave the Symposium with full complement of our efforts, i.e. templates, drawings, photos.

Art--unless it's confidential, would be interesting to know which builders attend this special class. Regards, Mike

Jim will need to fill you in on who is in the class........I'm not doing the Luthiers Track......it was John Monteleone last year.
The luthier class does Music Appreciation in the morning with everyone, then disappears to the shop for much of the week.....
I've got a pre symposium pick at my studio Sunday night, as a lot of the out of towners I've met in previous years, will fly into SF a day early.
Fellas from Italy, NY, Cincy, and Atlanta. Paulo for Italy does ok on English....but is really well versed in Dawg! Pretty cool when I find someone to try & play the harmony parts with.....
