A friend of ours just told us about a Black Maple tree he has on his property. Then he took us to see it. WOW it was huge. We got some of the seedlings to transplant on our land. I have never heard of these before he told us about them. I did a google search and found out a few things about the trees. They are rare in my neck of the woods(East Tennessee). What the articles didn't talk about is if they are any good for making instruments. Is the wood any good for instruments? If it is ,we will try to get more seedlings.

Well it never hurts to look to the future. Maybe a tonewood dealer in 4 or 5 generations can get some good from them.

Curoius,
I hope we can help out the kids in 4 or 5 generations by planting trees now. If we are lucky the trees will survive until then.

I don't know if that friend of ours would ever be interested in selling the huge tree he has on his property???

I don't have any first hand experience with Black Maple,...that I know of...
I understand from what I've read that the wood commonly gets mixed and sold with Sugar Maple. Those two maples are the hard maples of the Eastern US, and, I gather have very similar wood. Based on that, I assume Black Maple would be good tonewood, because I know Sugar Maple to be.

Thanks sunburst. This friend of ours has a few different kinds of maple on his property. I'm going to try to getting more seedlings. I am glad to hear that the Black Maples make good tonewood.
