Hello, I'm from Australia, visiting the fair united states in just over a week. I'm going to the mandolin symposium, in Santa Cruz, which should be pretty amazing, but the week before i'm spending in San Francisco. I was wondering whether any could tell me the location of any good mandolin stores there, because I woudl relish the chance to try out a decent selection of mandolins, and perhaps buy strings etc, save the cost of freight I normally pay to send them out here.
Thanks for any help
Alex Gordon
If you'll have a rental car check out Frank Ford's place in Palo Alto. It's just south of SF.
Gryphon Strings (http://www.gryphonstrings.com/)
Frank also created and maintains frets.com (http://www.frets.com).
The 5th String in Berkeley, not far from S.F..

Alex,
What kind of music do you play? How long have you been pickin'?
Maybe we can direct you to a jam session? Check the Freight & Salvage's
web site, they are in Berkeley, a great folk club, maybe they have someone
you're interested in seeing while you are in the SF Bay Area.

I am 15 minutes from Santa Cruz. Try Sylvan Music. They have a range of Webers, Eastmans and a few others.Sylvan Music (http://www.sylvanmusic.com/)
What is the deal on the symposium? I haven't heard about it. We have a regular Irish session every other Sunday and a few American trad sessions as well, plus a few in the Los Gatos - San Jose area.
Where in Oz are you?

Bob, We'll cut you some slack since that was your first post. The Mandolin Symposium is a music camp put together by Mike Marshall & David Grisman. This is the 3rd year..incredible list of instructors & folks come from all over for a week of mando madness @ UC Santa Cruz.

I don't get out much...<G>
One of the guys I play with sent me an e-mail about it just after I poseted...duh! Looks like a great time!
I used to be a member of a mando list, maybe a precurser to this one, in the late 90s when I was playing mando full time.
