I'm thinking about going this weekend? I've never been and was just wondering if anyone else was going. I noticed that David Grisman is playing Saturday night.

I went the last two years. It is sooooo great. I dont live in Austin anymore and Im really unhappy about having to miss it this year. If you have the opportunity, go. Also, the kerrville folk fest is about 100 times better and will be happining in central TX in a few months. Another festival I will have to miss.....siggghhh...

So, you like the Kerrville festival better? At this point, I haven't seen any big names like Grisman associated with it but I haven't checked lately. I've always wanted to go to one but I never have. I live in Corpus so either is a drive. If I go, I'll let you know how it is. Thanks!

Hey Beachbum, I'll be going early Friday morning, this is gonna be one of the best line-ups that I have seen in one place. I went last year and had a good time. Really enjoyed the Mandolin workshop/jam with Ronnie. I'm hoping this year David Grisman and Tim O'brien join the workshop. Perhaps see ya there. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Well, Kerrville isnt better because of the acts. It is simply heaven on Earth. I would sleep most of the day, catch the evening acts and wait for the real fun. The best part of that festival takes place from about midnight to 6 am. The campground is the most alive then. All the musicians and the concert goes pick all night by campfires. Once you leave one pickin circle you can already hear the next two or three. Just wander all night. Like anyone who has been kerrverted knows, "it has always been this way, It can always be this way."

Kerrville is more a songwriter's festival. Some of the "campfires" are very political. Everyone is expected to play an original song in turn. It can be kind of intimidating (and just a bit cultlike).
I actually preffered the Winfield festival when I went a couple of years ago. Sort of an odd mix of hippies and older, traditional bluegrass fans. It's more of a performer's festival, and the weather is much cooler than Kerrville in late May!

Where is the Winfield festival? Anywhere near my neck of the woods?

If your neck of the woods is anywhere close to south central Kansas, 30 miles or so from Wichita, then yes. If not then no. It is about a 9 hour drive from central Texas and well worth the drive in September. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
