This picture appeared in an ad in the Wichita newspaper last week. #It just made me sad. #When they took the picture, they probably genuinely thought it was a uke...

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that picks his mando with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile..."

William Shakespeare (paraphrase, sorta)

"What's in a name? That which we call a mandolin
By any other word would sound as sweet..."

Why? Mandolins (and particularly that kind of mandolin) is NOT something totally unknown in Hawaiian music. That is, if by Hawaiian music you mean the music actually played at one time by Hawaiians from c1800-c1935, and not the dreck from the '50s.

Of course if you're talking about the shirt definitely not going with the skirt, then I can understand your point of view. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Well, there's no way one could mistake it for a cow bell.

Tonight the bluegrass jam didn't happen due to weather so I went to a club that features all kinds of music. Tonight it was a blues band - they were good and kept my interest. Not much of a crowd. The barmaid said something to the effect that the band has to promote themselves to bring their following - she is right. I mentioned that I used to play at this club quite a bit many years ago. She asked what instrument did I play to which I replied mandolin and guitar. She immediately said, remember Tiny Tim? Yikes. Oh well...
