View Full Version : Ry Cooder on Love in Vain
Was killing time in the local library last night, reading a Stones biography book. The writer described Cooder's work on that tune as 'crying mandolin'. Interesting choice of words.
The debauchery, rampant drug use, lifestyle of that band - it's amazing to me anyone has survived, let alone continues to perform.
And yet, the Rollin' Uglies are still packin'em in, wherever they go.
Ry Cooder's mando on that one doesn't really reach out and touch me like most the rest of his body of work does. #Keith's guitar, OTOH, pins me to the wall.

Awhile back I TABBED out Ry's first solo, but I never got any feedback on accuracy.
I think it's just about perfect in that setting.
Keef's acoustic is good and well worth learning as well.
Not to hijack the thread, but a few years back I had the misfortune of seeing the Stones on a bad night, and man,
they can really, really stink. The reason I bring it up, is that thru the miracle of close circuit TV, we could clearly see how tickled they were at murdering the tunes for the paying audience. Insult to injury I think they call it.

Here is an interview I scanned from an old Mandolin World News issue with Cooder (1979-80). #He described the solo as nothing too spectacular, but it did, somewhat, put the mandolin in the view of popular culture. #It also discusses some of his Hawaiian influenced music, which I would like to get a hold of.
The file is too big so I had to download at yousendit.com. #It should be up for 7 days. #If someone wants it after that I will load it again.
