I have an old Regal resonator mandolin. Wood body with cone, spider bridge. The action and intonation is bad. To put it shortly, it sucks. Instrument has great tone, it's just not playable. I removed the cover plate, bridge and cone to see what it will take to possibly reset the neck. This instrument has no sound well. It has a thin plate that looks to be made of maple, but no bracing or well of any kind to strengthen the top. Are these instruments built in the same manner as resonator guitars? If so, how hard is it to build a well for this instrument? The neck looks really good without the pull of string tension, so I'm pretty conficent that I have found the problem. Sorry for the length of the post.
