Another question, what's the best thing to wipe the dust off after sanding varnish so it dust speck up the next coat?

Old T-shirt?

Wet with something? Water? Alcohol?

I use micro fiber dish towels, available at most stores (Walmart). They are very soft and seem to get all of the dust. I don’t use water or alcohol. I’d probably use Naphtha if I needed to.

Get a tack cloth from a paint store. It'll beat an old cloth in getting up dust.

I thought there was some reason not to use a tack cloth, like it left some residue that was not compatible with something (I forget what)???

Tac cloths are usually soaked with bee's wax. It's compatible with most varnishes.
I have an electrostatic "tac cloth" that supposedly attracts the dust and holds it 'til you wash the cloth. It seems to work pretty well.

John, where did you find that tac cloth? Inquiring minds want to know. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've got one of those electrostatic-tac-thingys, or I think it's the same thing you're talking about. I never would have thought to use it for finishing. Good idea, John!

Mine was a sample from a computer supplies vendor... for suckin' dust off the old CRT.

A friend of mine gave it to me. He works here (http://www.mcfeelys.com/product.asp?pid=MFT-3884), and often has samples of things.

(edit) click on the word "here" above. It's a link, but might not look like it with the new face of the message board http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif .

kvk......what you might thinking of is.....they warn against using traditional tack cloths with the Oxford water-based finishes.

Perhaps I should start another thread for this, but I was looking around the website John posted for the wiping cloth and came across CrytaLac. (http://www.mcfeelys.com/product.asp?pid=CLP-1900) It is a gloss, waterwhite, waterborne finish for instruments. Has anyone tried it?

Well, my friend gave me a damaged can of that to try, but I never got around to trying it before I let it freeze.
There are luthiers using it with good results, so I'm told.
