Hey everyone,

I've been living in Chicago for about a year and a half but I can't seem to track down the mandolin scene [who the cats to see are, where the jams happen, etc.] so I'm sending out a post to anyone who is more in the know.

I'm also looking for cats to jam with. I play the mando but my main axe by far is the guitar [which I've seriously studied for around 12 years now- even got one of them there degree paper to prove it. Are you impressed? Yeah I know- it's sad.]

Hey Tybelly,

To get connected to the bluegrass mandolin scene, go to http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bgrass-chatbox-illinois/. There's about 260 members, mostly local to the northern Illinois area, comprised of bluegrass fans and amateur to pro musicians. You can hear who is playing, where the jams are, etc. I play mandolin in a local band and there are a few other bluegrass bands in the area.

For jazz, bluegrass, or whatever, the mando cat to see in Chicago is Don Stiernberg, so make sure you track him down. He plays in the area quite a bit in addition to touring. If you catch him at a show during a break he'd probably be happy to chat with you.

Hello, I'm phynie. I live in carol stream. I have to second the notion of going to see don stiernberg. He is an AMAZING player and a great guy. He also happens to be my teacher. He is the bee's knees! I don't really know of any jams happening but there is definitley some mandolin action in chicago. Just gotta poke around!
