Probably a silly question, but as I blindly feel my way through my first mando I hope you folks can offer some advice.

I was wondering whether I am supposed to stop my varnish at the binding line on the fingerboard, or do I mask it at the top next to the fretwires and varnish the sides of the fingerboard binding? It seems like if I do varnish just the sides of the binding then it would chip along the edges or show evidence of the different layers, but if I varnish just up to the edge of the binding and not varnish the binding at all I would have a funny textural difference....
hmmm.
What do I do here?
Thanks,
Austin

I mask the binding just a few thousands shy of the neck. Then when I french polish I remove the tape and french the binding.
