I'm working on number one, which is an A4, and I've decided that a rosette around the oval at this time is beyond my comfort level, however, I've decided to bind the oval instead.

I've made some basic assumtions about how to do this and would appreciate a sanity check.

A.) I need to bind the oval while the top is still off the mandolin?
B.) I don't need to actually prepare a binding channel, I can simply glue the binding to the sides of the oval and level the inside and outside when the glue is dry.
C.) I can use long rubber bands as clamps to hold the binding while it dries.

B.) is the big question for me and if their is a better alternative for C.) I'd sure like to know what it is.

Thanks very much,

A. Easier,but not necessary.
B. True
C. Easier to cut your binding a trifle long (experiment)so that you get a press fit at
the butt joint. Tension will hold it tight.

LMI sells this stuff called binding tape that may be easier to handle. I don't know; I've never used it, but I plan to on my oval (if I ever finish getting the top carved, sheesh).

You dry fit the binding inside the hole such that it is very tight and just holds itself in by butting against its ends. If you are doing a blond top then you can just flow thin CA into it and then tape it down. If you are going to stain the top then you need to use binding glue and will likely have to apply glue then work the binding in by hand and then tape it. Make sure you use binding that is wide enough because you don't want to have to bend it in its lateral way.

Chris, Mark and Jim,

Thanks for the answers, I feel comfortable doing this now.
