As luck would have it, I found myself in Nashville with a few hours before a flight home. So, I stopped in at Gruhns. They've got some great inventory in there right now, including a Gibson Bush, Flatiron F5, Sullivan, two Summits, two 1922/1924 Gibson A-1s, a 198X Henderson, a '17 Gibson F4, slew of Michael Kellys, but one of my favorites was a oval hole Old Wave. A beautiful blonde indeed with great tortoise binding and she plays like a dream. My first chance to pick one of Bill's instruments and the finish work and tone are really outstanding. AT $1800, I'm surprised that mando is still around although it may have just come in recently. The folks there are really nice as well, and just let you pick away without the hard sell. Great place!

Actually, that Old Wave has been there for at least several months because I was in the market for one at the time and it was the only one readily available at the time.
Alas, the funds never came together, but its nice to hear a report on it. #Sure looks pretty, too, from photos on the website.
Also, to the Old Wave fans out there, I noticed a couple days ago Elderly has a used Old Wave A-style w/ f-holes on consignment....relatively speaking, there's not a whole heck of a lot of difference in asking price between a new one and this one on consignment, but just thought I'd pass along the lead.

Hey all,
Another heads up. There was an A oval hole syle on the classifieds for 1200. A whole lot better (and more realistic) than the 1600 being asked at Elderly's. These are great deals though for anyone in the market.

Boone,
I wish I had know you were going. I work two blocks from Gruhns and swing in quiet a bit. They have some instruments not on display including a Collins that will knock you soxs off. I hope you enjoyed your visit.

I was there 2 weeks ago and played 3 of them and they all were great.Billy was really cordial to me and my wife while shopping there as well

When I visited last year, I played a $12,000 guitar that was just sitting out where anybody could try it! Cool place.

I worked in downtown Nashville for 6 years and a guy I worked with was a pretty good flatpicker. #We used to go to Gruhns every Friday on our lunch hour and grab a couple of flattops and flatpick for an hour. #Usually there was almost no other customers around and the staff was really cool about it - one lady used to come down from the office and do her work there so she could listen to us. #It was in the old location - a couple of doors down from where they are now and there was a bigger try-out room/closet where we could sit and pick.
I've always found the staff there very cool. #George on the other hand is not Mister Warm & Coozy. #However, he definately knows his stuff. #I lived in Texas for a few decades and at the Arlington Guitar Show in 1980 I took an old Gibson L-7 I had. #George looked at it and said:
1. #This is guitar was made in 1937
2. #The pickguard is not original
3. #The inlay and woodblock on the tail piece are not original
In 1991, I had moved to Nashville and needed some cash, so I took the L-7 down to Gruhns to see if they'd buy it. #I was showing it to one of the staff when George walked by. #He stopped and said, "I've seen this guitar before.....
1. #This is guitar was made in 1937
2. #The pickguard is not original
3. #The inlay and woodblock on the tail piece are not original
It flipped me out.
