View Full Version : D string buzz
I seem to be having a problem with my D string buzzing from time to time- it both buzzes and makes the harmonic sound-
so far I have tried to adjust the pitch to correct the problem but this does not help every time
I have not changed my strings in a while- could this help?
the instrument is only a couple of years old and I bought it new only 4 months ago
i would love some suggestions
thanks

Where along the length of the instrument does it seem to buzz: nut, fretboard, bridge?
also, does it make a difference where you fret the string as to whether or not it buzzes?
If it's at the nut then the string(s) may not be seated properly in the slots, or the slots may not have been cut to give a clean break over the fretboard side of the nut...
If it's over the fretboard then it could be an uneven/raised fret, or maybe neck relief needs attention.
If it's at the bridge the the problem could be a similar one to what can happen at the nut.
There are quite a few possibilities. A bit more info might help someone guess what's causing it.

yep, zoe... we need more info...
start by putting on some new strings- your strings are at least 4 mo. old (older, if those are the strings that came on the mando)... and then you'll have the chance to rule out funky string issues (which can happen).
if it still buzzes/chimes, try using the "diagnosing string buzzes" resource at frets.com
This site is a tremendous resource... and it will walk you through different ways of testing for the source of the buzz.
Since you say it buzzes and also makes the harmonic sound, my first impression (based on this limited info) would be to look for a high fret where the string hitting it would buzz and also make the harmonic. But the harmonic could also be coming from sympathetic vibrations below the bridge or above the nut. Also, sometimes an instrument just rings on a certain frequency.
so... more info? let us know what you figure out...
