Registration for the second annual Cape Cod Mandolin Camp (http://nemandolins.com) is now open. Butch Baldassari is the special guest. The camp will be Sept. 29-30 & Oct. 1, 2006.
CCMC is a multi-stylistic, ensemble-oriented camp for mandolinists. There's also a public concert (Sept. 30) featuring Butch Baldassari, the New England Mandolin Ensemble, and other CCMC faculty.
Thanks for the bandwidth. See you there!

Sounds like fun! August, so I have a better idea what to expect from CCMC can you elaborate a bit more on the similarities / differences between CCMC and Mike Holmes Mandocamp North which just ended?
Thanks,
Larry

Sure! I just got back from Mando Camp North myself -- taught a workshop on the low mando instruments, where I spend much of my time these days.
The two camps have very different concepts -- at MCN the emphasis is on workshops, with time set aside for jamming. CCMC also has workshops and jam time, but there's an equal emphasis on playing in faculty-led groups. CCMC ensembles range widely in style (bluegrass, jazz, classical, etc.), and the weekend culminates in a student ensemble concert. Workshops are stylistically diverse, and designed to appeal to both classically-trained and folk- or popular-oriented musicians.
CCMC also features a public concert, showcasing the special guest and faculty in a concert of mandolin ensemble music. So you could say at CCMC the emphasis is on exploring ideas for mandolin ensembles, with varying styles and approaches.
MCN and CCMC are six months apart, so why not go to both? #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

So do you guys work mostly with tab or standard notation. I am acutaly considering attending this event, I just love Cape Cod. Is this really for me though? Thats what I am trying to find out now.

So do you guys work mostly with tab or standard notation.
That depends entirely on which ensemble you attend. The ensembles have a broad range of approaches:
Standard Notation Only:
Marilynn Mair's Classical ensemble
Using Standard/Tablature/Ear equally
(reading either tab or standard will work here):
my jazz/blues ensemble
Jim Dalton's Baroque/Renaissance Ensemble
Butch Baldassari's bluegrass ensemble
Using no written music at all:
Seth Austen's by-ear ensemble
Beverly Woods' by-ear ensemble
There's more on ensembles here. (http://nemandolins.com/Camp-ensembles.html)
There's no requirement of reading music at all #-- although readers will find plenty of challenges. Marilynn will be teaching a workshop on reading for non-readers, so there will be a place to get started for those who want to learn.
As for missing IBMA: #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
