What happened to Abernathy's hand?

While watching Mountain Heart on Jubilee this past week, and over and over again cause I taped it. Couldn't help but marvel over Barry Abernathy's playing style on the Banjo. Does anyone know what happened to his left hand. Not really a Mando question I know. But I didn't feel like registering on the Banjo forum web page.

Nothing happened to it, (other than it learned to play the heck out of a banjo) he was born with it that way.

Thanks John, was just curious. Kind of looked like maybe an accident caused it. He sure is impressive on that banjo!

I wondered the same thing after we saw them at Wintergrass last year. After the band tore it up on a fast instrumental tune he turned to the band and said "you guys could play faster if you didn't have them fingers in the way". It was hilarious.
