Last week I had the pleasure of being taught by John Moore at the Sore Fingers bluegrass and old time camp in England. I just want to tell everybody that if you ever get the chance of lessons off John take it - he is the most superb, thorough teacher I have encountered. And what a nice guy with it! My confidence in my playing has skyrocketed thanks to his tips and advice.
Also present was Mike Compton who has given me a whole new appreciation of Monroe style playing. I've never really found that style particuarly inspiring but having spent a couple of hours watching him play just 2 feet away it suddenly all makes sense. So much to take away and try and learn. The highlight of the week was when Mike and John got together for a joint lesson which was really a jam - 2 or 3 hours of world class picking and improvisation. Absolutely incredible.
Anyway to those bluegrassers amongst you in the UK (or elsewhere!) get your bookings in for next year, it's the best thing you'll ever do to improve your playing and the most fun you'll ever cram into a week.
