Shooting at Owls in the Dark ... Fingerpicking

I sometimes visit the Folk of the Wood site just to listen to and enjoy Mickey Cochran play various instruments. On some of the online videos he actually uses fingerpicks. Is this still an unusual and new method for the mandolin? Has anyone tried playing the instrument in this manner?

Duo style is one technique, two melody lines at once.
Tremoloing a melody line with a finger and playing another melody with your thumb.
....perhaps in 2 different meters..
Radim Zinkle, has gotten the knack of this style.
Somewhat different from transfering your guitar right hand fingerstyle to another fretted string instrument.
