I want to find some jams in my area, which is San Diego and I'm curious what suggestions anyone might have on how to go about it. I'm another reformed guitarist. I recieved a cheap mandolin (w/my short stubby fingers it's what I should have been playing all along!) when I helped a friend move (sometimes having a PU truck and being nice REALLY pays off!). Due to being tone-deaf I end up writing my own songs--just like on guitar--so I'm really good and really terrible at the same time (or alternately), so it would have to be beginner type friendly. I thought I could post on here and see what happens and I think I just did...

check around at your local music stores, check with the California Bluegrass ###. if thats your thing, they'll be able to steer ya in the right direction.

Hi,

the san diego bluegrass association has meetings (which involve jams) on Tuesdays around the san diego area. #their website is:
http://members.aol.com/intunenews/main.html

i know they have a couple of meetings each month in la mesa.

i get to san diego every month or so. #i'd be happy to jam.

also, i'll be in ft. lauderdale later this month (april 25-29). does anyone know of jams in that area?

Jongo:

Come and jam with us on the 2nd tuesday of every month at Fuddrucker's in Grossmont Center in El Cajon (just east of San Diego) from 7pm until 10pm. It's very newbie friendly. #In fact, it's just plain friendly. There's lots of good people with a minimum of attitude.#We have a band playing inside and usually 2 or 3 jam circles outside.

I'll be playing a Breedlove oval hole mandolin so come say "hi" if you see me.

By the way, kids are welcome as well. This is a very family friendly event. #If you need more info then go to the "Contact Us" section of My Webpage (http://www.brouelette.com) and give me a call at that phone number.

If you are looking for old-time jams, I would check to see if there are any local contra dance groups. The musicians who play for the dances will likely know about the jams. For that matter, anywhere you can find local OT musicians playing, you can probably ask them on a break and they will know.

Try also The Session (http://www.thesession.org) to search for local Irish/celtic sessions. A read through their discussion board will help you decide if you want to go to one of these. Even if you don't play Irish/Scottish etc it would be worth going along for a look and listen. Quite often a mandolin or two involved.

First Tuesday of the month: The North County Bluegrass and Folk Club meets at Round Table Pizza, Ash and Washington, Escondido (7-10 p.m.)

Second Tuesday of the Month: The San Diego Bluegrass Society meets at Fuddruckers in La Mesa at the Grossmont Shopping Center (7-10 p.m.)

Third Tuesday of the Month: South Bay Bluegrass Jam at Fuddrucker's, Chula Vista (340 3rd Ave.)

Third Wednesday of the Month: The Golden Goose Coffee House in Lakeside hosts Lighthouse Bluegrass Band from 7 to 9 p.m. (10001 Maine Ave.)

Fourth Tuesday of the Month: Shirley's Kitchen in La Mesa (7868 El Cajon Blvd.) hosts a bluegrass jam each month starting around 6p.m.

Also, there's a woman named "Emma" who has slow jams at her house every Wednesday and Sunday. #Meet me at FuddRucker's on the 2nd tuesday jam and I'll introduce you to her.

For Celtic Jams the Blarney Stone pub (at 5617 Balboa Ave. cross street Genesee Ave.) # has Celtic jams on (I think) every Wednesday night.

Every other Thursday (roughly) there is a mountain dulcimer jam at Connie Allan's house. I can give you that info if you want.

So if you really wanted to drive around the county you could theoretically jam at least 3 nights a week. Of course, then you build this collectin of bluegrass playing friends and you can have them over to your house on your "off" nights. Then you can jam every night until your wife kicks them (or you) out of the house http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The 2nd Tuesday jam, which is 5 days from now on April 13th, is the big one. If it's at all possible for you to get there then don't miss that one.
