It came this morning, it is definently different. The fit is good, the finish is not perfect, but I expected that seeing how it is handmade. It sounds great, I will play it throughout the day and let you know more this evening. I brought it to work with me so hopefully it will be a slow day. Overall I'm impressed so far, it's a lot of instrument for $405, I'm still not sure about the maple bridge, I may put my ebony on it and see how that changes the tone.

Congratulations!
It's great that its sounding good right out of the box.
I'm very curious about what you end up thinking about the Red Henry designed bridge. And what the comparison is between the adjustable ebony...
I'm also interested in hearing what the comparison is between your Allen and your father's Glenn. Could you please share your insights?
I hope that it works out to be a great mandolin for you.

Harmonyrexy, it's not as "woody" sounding as dad's Glenn, but has a great tone and the volume is good now, and will only get better. I'm not sure about the bridge, I'm changing it in a few minutes so I'll let you know more later today. I think the ebony bridge and some D75's will give it more bass and woody tone. I am definently ordering an Allen or James tailpiece. Like I said earlier, it's a lot of mandolin for the money, I'm well pleased with it, just a few adjustments and I'll have the sound I want. I believe as it opens not only the volume will come up, but also the tone.

Sounds great!
Your deliveryman must have gotten there first thing this morning. Terrific.
I've been thinking of the day my 2nd Allen was delivered, the F. I knew that it would be that day so I had my eye out for the mailman. When he brought it off of the truck, he had the strangest look on his face... probably checking out the insurance on the box.
He said to me, "That must be one heck of a chainsaw!" I said, 'Buddy, you don't know the half of it'... We got a good laugh.. since Bernard Allen had packed it in an old chainsaw box.
It's not quite as loud as a chainsaw but it can tear it up pretty well.
I had also thought of changing the tail piece to a James. I'd figured that it would be better even if it was just in the string changing department. I just never got around to that. Maybe I should.
It sounds like you got a 'winner'.... good sound, good fit, and good price.

Put a rosewood bridge and J-74's on the Allen and man it sounds awesome, I am ordering a sullivan ebony bridge and an Allen tailpiece and that should make it even better. It has a nice woody tone now and chops great. I am well pleased with it. I plan on taking it to the Jam tomorrow night. It's sounding real close to dad's Glenn now.
