Are there any direct replacement tuners available for a teens Gibson A mandolin? The tuners on mine work but there is some slippage and of course I'm spoiled by modern tuners as well. Any help would be appreciated,

phoenix,

This topic has been discussed pretty thoroughly lately. Try this thread as a starting place, and do some more searches:

http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin....ibson+a (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=28923;hl=tuners+for+vin tage+gibson+a)

The short answer from the experts on the board here is: no. The longer answer is: why...the old tuners can likely be made to work just fine...often there are other reasons for tuner troubles, like a binding nut slot, etc...

Good luck getting it sorted out!

Keith

P.S. - I should have added that I feel your pain; I have a teens Gibson with tuning troubles as well...

I think this other thread (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=32383) covered the issue pretty thoroughly. Old Gibsons gears, particularly from that era, can almost always be put back in tip-top order. As Keith said, the trouble with tuning isn't always the gears, but rather the slots in the nut and sometimes in the bridge. Gears usually get blamed however, and it's unfortunate. Read the thread about Handel tuners.

Thanks for all the help!!! I cleaned and lubed the tuners on my old Gibson A and they are working better then they ever had for me. One of the gears at the end of the peg is cracked (split) but at least it works and I know what the problem is.
