View Full Version : slingerland maybell
i have one of these supposely 1920's, it has the name slingerland & maybell plus the no 250 stamped on the dowel inside the drum, its in excellant condition. the solid wood rim is 5/8 of an inch thick, mother of pearl diamond position markers and mop star on an ebony head.a very sturdy, well made instrument, but un playable because of its small size, 8 1/2 inch drum, and a complete lenght of only 20 inches. why would someone take the time and effort to make an instrument so small ? any history on this would be appreciated, thanks.
Lawrence, I was just looking at Slingerland instruments on the internet for a friend inrerested in their banjo ukes. Do a search on that name and you will find quite a few related web sites. Also check eBay, as I have seen them there.
I have a MayBelle banjo uke, it was in rough shape, missing fingerboard and most all the hardware. neck [soundly fitted rim stick] and pot rim was pretty much It.
with the help of a Luthier, it now has a spruce 'head' and a nylon string mix for mandolin 5ths .
nicknamed it 'kawlija' after the hank williams tune
wooden head, [part of wooden 'indian']
What is the scale length of this mandolin banjo?
I picked up Slingerland Maybelle banjoe uke very cheap 15-20 years ago (pre ebay when funky old instruments could still be found at auctions and tag sales) and just about never played it. Last week I brought it to a luthier to have it converted to a piccolo b*#jo. He was pretty impressed with the construction of the thing. Slingerland morphed into primarily a drum company over time. There's a web site on Slingerland history (just google slingerland history and it'll come up) that says that they got into drums because they were mad at Ludwig for getting into banjos, and they had the production capabilities and skin sources for drums already based on their banjo business.
could this be a picolo banjolin ?
scale lenght is only 12 inches
This is my '32 Slingerland...I believe it has a whopping 11" head.
Tom - looks like a mandobanjeaurine?
