Basically pick up and mandolin dvd or book if your tuning it GDAe. I enjoyed the Norman Blake, and Sam Bush ( although bush is more Bluegrass and Blake is more old time )

Zan Mcleod has a dvd out for the bouzouki DGAd tuning.

Mc Kee a bouzouki cd rom on GDAe tuning.

There is also a vol 1 and 2 from the Zoukfest bunch, run by Roger Landes. I think the small section that Roger teaches is still one of the best so far. Roger is a fantastic play and I really would love for him to do a full teaching dvd, he has a fantastic style of playing !

If it is just tunes, there are a few good ones for the OM on my site www.chinatogalway.com (http://www.chinatogalway.com/TAB.htm)
it includes songs, irish tunes and balkan tunes..........that should keep you very busy !

Don't forget John McGann's octave mandolin book/cd...it has both rhythm and melodic parts... separated in to left and right speakers (so you can isolate them when listening to practice with the one you're learning....and when more independent, you can practice with the opposite part)... also notated separately in both tab and music notation. I wouldn't say that this is a beginner's book...but it is a great resource for advanced beginners-->intermediate and beyond.

Thanks Kieron! As a matter of fact I am planning a set of full length DVDs on various topics. First one will be introductory, others advanced. I hope to get it shot this summer and out by the end of the year, but we'll see.

I have a clear idea of what I think I want to present but am interested in what you and others think should be included.

I am interested in learning more about using passing chords to use in standard progressions such as I IV V and I VII (Em D)/(Am G). Applying these progressions to standard melodies would make it most clear for me. Multiple examples of how to 'color' the same melody is also something I am intersted in.

Thank-You

Thanks Bill. By "'color' the same melody" do you mean when you are playing the melody or how to add color to the tune when you are accompnying it?

Add color to the tune when I am accompanying it. Chord variations etc.

Yep. I'll cover chord inversions and substitutions.
