Interested in expanding your musical horizons beyond the usual 12-tone, tonic-dominant thing? #Give a listen to ragas played on the electric mandolin by "Mandolin" U. Shrinivas. #I picked up the CD Sahavaadhan --- Mandolin Shrivinas' duets with famed sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan. Mandolin Shrivinas' playing is amazing --- soaring and ethereal!

He definitely is a unique treasure in the mandolin world - there's some good history and reviews on him at U Shrinivas Web Page (http://www.mandolinshrinivas.org/) - I have always liked Indian classical music, though it does take some getting used to.

He really is sensational. I have a few of his cds, including one that he did with Shakti. I find his playing to be very inspirational.

I agree with michaell, he is sensational. I was a fan of Carnatic classical music before picking up the mandolin. I had purchased a half dozen of so of his CDs while in India. Most of his works are hard to find in the U.S.
It is not surprising that the Mandolin fits so well into Carnatic classical music since the Violin has become very popular among South Indian musicians.
Anyway if you are near Chennai (Madras) in January there is a huge music festival where U. Srinivas usually plays.
Alternatively you can listen much of his music at this
site (http://www.kannadaaudio.com/Songs/Instrumental/home/MandolinSrinivas/index.php).

would love to hear some of his stuff, but for some reason, the few audio and vid clips on his site don't seem to do anything???
