I'm thinking of buying a Wagner Safety Planer to use to final thickness the outside edge of the top and back plates. Can't find a Wagner safety planer anywhere. Has anyone tried a router rabbiting bit in a drill press for the same purpose? I'm curious as to what other methods are used to accomplish this.

Woodcraft.com has saftey planers. I know a few other places have them too. They run about $45. They work wonderfully for thicknessing the edge of plates and also for thicknessing the back of the peghead. I've not used a router bit for the job. A router bit is made to spin above 20k rpm, a drill press usually tops out at 3.8k rpm.

Here it is (http://shop.woodcraft.com/Woodcraft/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=3189&gift=False&mscssid=F5E604E7329F47E2AE6F88CD4741A376)
I have used various router bits in the drill press, I recomend the safety planer, it works much better and "feels" safer. Pay attention to the RPMs. They don't work well slower than recomended.

Thanks Sunburst.
The safety planer will be shipped out to me Monday morning. Yet another problem solved via the Cafe. Now, if I could just get my hands on copies of the Dude on DIY TV, hmmmm......
