Having the day off, I wondered down to the Gibson Showcase. Big Joe was his hospitable best, but beyond that he let my try out his DMM. The tone is all that it was cracked up to be. There was no distinct high, mid and low range as you experience in most mandolins, just a one range. The tone was subtle but strong, with lots of character. He played it with and without the Tonegard. I did not notice a volume difference, but I did notice a rounder, fuller sound. I also played a number of mandos off the wall, with a Doyle Lawson having a nod for the best sound of them, but not in the DMM's category. I was again impressed with the two F9s I played. Thank you Big Joe for just being you. There was another employee who put Big Joe's DMM through the paces. Was a very smooth player and even played a little David Grisman sounding much like the Dawg. The Gibson folks make it a pleasure to visit them. Thank you again.

Tony,
I do not remember his name but I think your talking about the guy who does some varnish work in the center of the floor. He also has a nice custom mando sometimes there with him to that is full of mojo.

I would like to add a thanks to Big Joe for relentlessly answering every question under the sun about Gibson mandolins here on the cafe.... and tactfully responding to the not-so-friendly posts too.

Thank you for the kind words on our facility. The young man you heard play is CD Vest. He worked in the mandolin production area until recently and then transferred to the retail store. He is a very talented picker and can pick nearly any style. He plays guitar mostly, but will have no problem keeping up with you on mandolin.

If you get a chance to visit the Opry Mills store, just ask and I'll be happy to spend some time with you if I'm in the building. We hope every trip to the Bluegrass Showcase is a special occasion.
