Can any of you recommend a good quality MP3 Player/Recorder that I can use to record my mandolin camp classes? I also want to be able to down load the recording to my computer to use as a practice tool at home. Also, I want to be able to transfer the recordings to my cd player on my computer. A good all purpose unit is what I am searching for. Price range: $100-150.

Will I also need to purchase a mic.? There will be approximately 25 students in the classroom.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

frank,

we were discussing this a bit a few weeks ago. i launched a bit of a search myself and came up with this list: MP3 Players/Recorders (http://mandolinproject.150m.com/mp3.html). beyond what's in this chart, you can find user reviews at www.cnet.com for many of these. i think all of these devices i've listed have a built in mic, but you'd probably do better with an external mic hooked up.

hope this helps a bit. be interested to know what you get in the end and how it works . . .

I bought an archos juskebox recorder for $150 at Frys. It's 15 gig. For what I use it for, I just use the internal mic. I'm very happy with it after downloading the RockboX software to correct it's awful user interface. You may have a problem with battery life though. A couple of hours is about all I can get out of it. and you can't record on it when it's plugged in. It switches to charge mode.

Thanks for the input. I'll check out the past thread. Also, I'll let you know what I buy and how it performed.

I have an Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 ($250) with a Sound Professionals sp-psam-2 mic / preamp combo ($200) for the line in.

I does a very good job. #I've recorded two concerts back to back on the battery in addition to a separate 3 1/2 hour jam session on a fresh charge. #Battery life on the Recoder 20 seems to be really good.

I'll second the plug for the Rockbox software upgrade (freeware). #It's not much different than the original Archos firmware, but it just works way better in all respects.

Here's my links to all this stuff online.
