I have seen plans and I have checked a few sources but I need to be certain. What is the minimum thickness for the back plate prior to carving. Will 5/8" be ok? I am sending some bookmatched Walnut overseas to a fellow Cafe member and I just need to be sure before it goes. Thanks.

5/8" is good. That's what I usually start with, but I wouldn't necessarilly say it's a minimum. If I had a really great piece of wood that was slightly thinner, I'd probably use it.

Sorry - they don't use inches in England anymore. You will have to recut it to metric. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
