Hopefully, I have included a partial section of the Stewmac A style drawing with this post. Notice that the location of the thickness, .160, is closer to the center on the treble side than it is on the bass side. Is this intentional or just accidental? I've gotten the impression that there is not much benefit to carve the instrument "asymetrically". Any thoughts?

These are the kind of slips that wind up on plans; It's likely "supposed" to be symmetrical on the plan, but these graduations are just that, graduations, constantly shifting thicknesses. Like you mentioned, top symmetry is not some magic formula that requires strict adherence to, so if you want to put one exactly where the other one is, it shouldn't really matter.
