View Full Version : Bobelock
My first impression was WOW. Very professionally built. great protection. Perfect fit. 2 compartments -1 on each side of headstock. Handy outer pocket. Hydrometer kit installed. protection pad. Shoulder strap for case included. -and one for your mando if you mention the cafe.
This would make somebody's cat very comfortable. BRW #27 not included.

..I just ordered and recieved that Hygrometer kit from FineCases.com...$34....seems to do the trick.....keeps the case interior at about 45%....they are great cases....cant say I didnt tell you so http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I have a few Bobelocks myself. #1 Double Fiddle and 1 Single Fiddle. #Great cases, and they certainly take a beating. #They're a bit heavy...but not Calton heavy by any means.
2 Thumbs up from my side as well...

I'm hoping to get mine in the mail today! Does the lid latch, zip and snap? If it does it has more backups than NASA!
Yes, it latches, zips and snaps. The hydrometer came with it. it is a little heavy but I'll keep my travelite for those portable occasions.
The only thing is I like to leave the strap on the mando which I can't do. maybe with a smaller strap. It did come with a nice roo mando strap but it looks like it's for over the shoulder where I go around the neck. I have not put it on yet.

For those interested in adding a humidifier/hygrometer combo like the one in the Bobelock case, have a look here:
http://www.humistat.com/
The cost is $12.10. #It appears to be the same one that Bobelock supplies, and the same as the one sold by FineCase at $34.
NFI and all the standard disclaimers...
Tom C...what kind of strap are you using? #I wonder if my Dude strap will fit?
maybe I'll start a post a pic of your strap thread. It's not huge. Just a little bulky where the loop for the scroll is.

Tom, super nice!
That is the perfect "NYC style-riding-the-rails-runnin-late-for-a-gig" kinda case.
I have got to look into one of those.
cheers!

..a great case for a great mando Mav..
Scotti Adams
Apr-01-2004, 4:32pm
..theres not much room for the strap to stay attached to the mando as it lays in the case....I just unhook it from the end pin but keep it attached to the scroll and tuck it out of the way...I use a 'Roo strap....and they are pretty dang thin..about 1/8 of an inch....I just got another one today and its even thinner than that....the best strap out there in my opinion...Mav..I havent seen a black/blue combo..can you get one that way?...Ive got a black one and its got a burgandy interior...I suppose they will make it anyway you want it..but you may have to wait longer if its something they have to make special...

Hey guys,
I had the Black Exterior/Blue Interior for my Smith Creek, so they are available.
I got my case in the mail yesterday....It is a really nice looking case but that closure system is certainly overkill in my opinion. I like all the storage area! The hydrometer and humistat are cool. It is not as bulky as my old Supercase but I don't think it offers the protection of the Supercase. If I had to check my mandolin on a plane I would much rather it be in the Supercase! The Bobelock sure is classy looking!
Ben, repeat after me.....Presto...Presto...Presto...or oblong Calton.
Scotti Adams
Apr-02-2004, 7:56am
..Dale...please dont mention Presto... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif and Ben..Im surprised you feel that way about the protection it offers...Ive owned both cases also and I believe they are very comparible...I do agree about all the snaps and buttons though...I dont zip mine at all...just the four snaps...the velcro on the flap and the actual hasp is enough for me...
Scotti...If I take my thumb and press down on the top of the Bobelock case I can feel it give a little. I could stand on my Supercase and it wouldn't budge....I wouldn't stand on the Bobelock! But...it is nicely made...very attentive to detail. I like the elastic built into the interior pockets (nice touch) I like the big zippered sheet music pocket on the top. I got the wine colored interior with the grey case cover. Funny thing it that my hydrometer is located in just the opposite locations of Tom's Bobelock logo and hydrometer.

..I just talked to Dale..he amended his last will and testament to include me...the Presto goes to me....in fact he put a Post-it note on it verifying this http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
These look like nice cases, but I wonder about the protection under the headstock and nut area. Usually the weakest area is right under the nut or where the nut groove is cut. Looking at the pictures above, it looks like the neck is supported, but I can't really tell if there's anything under the area of the nut or the headstock. Can an owner let me know?
Thanks,
Jim

Apr-02-2004, 10:21am
..theres nothing under the nut area or the headstock..I dont think that presents a problem..as you can see the neck is strapped down..no room for movement....plus..I usually have a couple of rags folded up in that area too...kinda cushions the back of the Ph...
Scotti, the thing that worries me about no support in that area is if a drop occurs, the whip lash effect normally would snap the neck at the nut without support. That's my biggest complaint with the TKL cases also, but I always keep bubble wrap covered with a cotton cloth in that compartment to keep that from happening in the TKL. I really like the idea of having a built in hydrometer and humistat though. Maybe we could ask the manufacturer to make or offer an add-on cushion for that area.

I have a Bobelock case for my fiddle. Well made and will certainly take a beating. I too purchased mine from Frank at Finecases.com. World class cutomer service and a fair price is what he is all about. Anyone needing a case should check finecases.com!
I really liked the Bobelock case when I checked out Scotti's. I know we all make mistakes but they got they started me off on a bad foot with the wrong color and no strap and no phone number to contact them when problems arrise. The only way to contact them is via email. I know they will make it right I just find it a pain in the butt when you can't get ahold of a live person on the other end.
When I ordered mine, the couple who run the warehouse was out for the week. Frank promptly emailed me and told me this and he did go ahead and send me the strap.

Has anybody used this case with a Tone-Gard on the mando? Does it fit? Any issues?
Thanks,
Ken
Scotti Adams
Apr-09-2004, 6:40pm
..Ken..The Tone-Gard will not fit while it is on the mando..I take it off...put the blanket over the mando and place the Gard on top of it in the peg head area..the top it curved enough to allow this...Ive never had any problems with it moving or coming out of place in my travels....hope this helps..

http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif Hi to everyone!
My name is David (Berliner) and -- for full disclosure -- my firm is the #HUMISTAT® Company. Over the past few months, I have been delighted to hear from a number of you who have tried our humidifiers and recommended them to friends and colleagues both offline and in Mandolin Cafe's Message Board discussions.
I've noticed that, from time to time, questions about humidification and/or HUMISTAT® Company products have been posted (and, sometimes, answered) by Board members.
I'd like to invite you to send any questions you have to me personally (whether or not you post the question on the Board) at dcberliner@humistat.com.
Allow me to share with you why HUMISTAT® Company products have been so popular with professionals, non-professionals, and students for so many years and why we have developed such a loyal corps of repeat customers. Our products are:
* Unique, with a patented mechanism
* Fully and easily ADJUSTABLE
* NEVER touch your instrument (much less are inserted inside them)
* Easy to fill using tap or, if you prefer, distilled water
* Clear, so you can see when a re-fill is needed
* Compact; no bulky or involved tubes or containers
* Priced very affordably. They're a small investment to protect your big investment -- your mandolin(s).
Thanks once again to those of you who have used and recommended our products, and we invite everyone to visit our Web site.
A special thanks to Scott, who runs this terrific site.

..that pic of mine is PH...pre Humistat...I have one in there now...but..the vial is cracked..leaks water...whats the chances on gettin a replacement???..Ive had it less than a month...
Scotti Adams
Apr-29-2004, 8:23pm
..heres the response I got from David concerning my cracked vial..now this is service people......
Scotti...First, our deepest apologies. Just about two months ago, we
received an email from a customer experiencing the same problem. We
investigated and discovered that our supplier apparently sent us a small
batch of cylinders that may not have been up to our specs. It is
possible--in fact, very likely-- that both of the units you purchased were
from that batch.
I'll not burden you with explanations beyond that, only to say that we have
sold hundreds of thousands of these units over the past 30 years and never
encountered a situation like this. We surely would not have remained in
business had we sold any products that did not live up to our quality
standards.
I thank you very much for writing to us about this; you could easily have
chosen not to, which would likely have left you frustrated, at the very
least, and us without the vital information you have provided.
Our customers are extremely important to us, in particular those (like
yourself) with whom we have had contact beyond receiving and filling an
order. You do not have to return the units. but if you are willing, we would
like to send you a replacement and an extra one at no cost by way of
thanks.. Before you put either of them in your case, fill them and empty
them as often as you like until (we hope) you are completely satisfied that
our products are of high quality despite their low price.
Again, on behalf of myself personally, and all of us at the HUMISTAT®
Company, our sincerest apologies.
Please e-mail me #the address to which the units should be sent.
Thank you for your understanding, Scotti.
Sincerely,
-- David

I appears that the humidifier just clips on to he accessories compartment cover, but how is the hygrometer mounted in the case? Does it have double sided tape or do I have to drill a hole or something?
Scotti Adams
Apr-30-2004, 7:16am
...the vial is held by a clip with a screw about the size of a tailpiece screw and the hygrometer is adhered with double sticky tape...

What's the sealing mechanism on these cases? I am interested in whether the case seal is waterproof? (not that you plan on getting caught in the rain with your mando, but it will happen eventually..) -- the Calton cases have a black rubber-looking lip around the top and the bottom sections which seal the case from moisture. I had a Calton case out in a pouring rain (waiting for a nonexistent 3rd world taxi company) for 1/2 an hour , and the inside of the case and mando were both bone dry. I'd get another Calton (for my new mando) but the huge wait list and 8 month delay don't interest me. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Sorry for the reply to this ancient thread, but I didn't want to make a new one for a simple question.
Do the Bobelock analog hygrometers (whether case-mounted or bought as a single unit), have a calibration or adjustment? I feel like they obviously do, but I have not been able to verify. Thanks
No, But I have not used this case in a verylong time. I like my Travel-Lite but the handle recently broke. They are much easier to carry over your shoulder since they are tapered. The new ones on the next thread look nice and may replace the Travel-Lite with one of these new ones.

What about the single hygrometer units unattached to cases? Any calibration screws or whatnot on those? Thanks, just trying to get a clear answer about the Bobelock hygrometers in general.
