Is it possible to install the SCHERTLER DYN-M on the inside of the instrument and send it out on a 1/4" jack through the endpin?
I know the chord it comes with has an XLR on the end. But I don't think it needs phantom power.
If so, does anyone have a used one or two for sale? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif)
Thanks

Howdy,
I am using Schertler mando and violin pickups. The violin model is The same, but a few dollars more, and comes with a plug. This can be connected to the strap of your instrument and would solve the problem. I would not recomend a permanent installation because of the tone. What I mean is, if you have a nice mando with a perfectly carved and graduated top, why would you want to leave something on it? I think that the pickup sounds great, except I notice that my mando maybe doesn't have the same sustain or brightness. I have yet to try attaching the pickup to the back, but that's my next experiment. For a permanent installation check out Tim O'Brien or Sam Bush. A bridge-piezo, and an internal mic either attached to the end jack (inside) or to the bottom F hole (outside). These can be run through a single endpin jack, and connected to a d/i box with a blender. Raven blenders are available on E-bay. If you're using #radiused fingerboard/saddle you could use the Baggs bridge model, or custom fit a fishman I guess. Are you using an amp also? PA? What kind of tone have you been getting with yours?
Thanks

Shertler makes a model designed for permanent internal installation, it goes under the top. It is somewhat lighter than the external removable model, I belive because the casing is removed. #It comes with an endpin jack. #I don't think it's listed anywhere on their website but it does exist and a dealer can get one for you. #I had one put on a Breedlove archtop oval hole and it worked well. #I didn't notice any change in the acoustic sound once the installation was complete. #I have since sold the mandolin, but I see it once a week and it's doing fine and sounding better as time goes on.
David, I have tried attaching the Schertler to the back of a mando, and it gives a more natural tone in my opinion, but the signal is weak, and it is more prone to feedback. #Also the pickup will rub against your belly and every scratch translates loudly through the pickup, so it's pretty useless. #I have not tried it again since I got a Tone Guard, that may help.

This is interesting. I don't think the sound will be effected much if I put a pickup on the top. Even less if I put it on the back. when I say, I am considering a permanent install I would install the pickup on the inside. I wonder how it would work on the inside stuck to the back. Will it still have the feedback issues. If it souunds better on the back and inhibits the sound less, that sounds like the way to go. Having it on the inside should reduce feedback issues. Maybe not.
This internal install model is good to know about. It is not on the website. I will try to pick up a used one of these DYN-Ms (mainly because it is something I really cannot affoard), a used internal instal one will be even more impossible to find. But if I'd order a new one, I would order that. I wonder if it is possible to remove the casing?
As far as bridge pickups are concerned, I considered them. Mainly the LR Baggs and the Fishman. But I really like the sound of my mando now, and if I'd swap the bridge out, I'd want a brekke. I would guess a good bridge makes more of a difference then a pickup stuck to the top.
Someone told me they have a DYN-M they are willing to part with. We have not talked about the price yet. But if we agree that means two things. I will not be buying the violin version with the handy plug and I will not be buying the internal install one http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif (But I'll have a pickup.)
So the question still remains. Can it be modified the easy way? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I doubt mounting it the back permantently will work, again unless maybe you are using a tone guard. The pickup is very sensitive to any vibration, almost like a microphone, so it will "hear" every time you rub against the back of the instrument and you will get annoying scratching noises from the pickup. Plug one in and touch it and you will see what I mean.

What you want is the DYN-C version. It is made to go on the inside of the mandolin and uses a 1/4" jack at the tail piece. It's what Breedlove uses. I have a picture of it. Let's see if the upload works.

Thanks this helps a lot. Only correction is that it is the C-DYN and not the DYN-C (which is for chello).
It is also cheaper. Cool. Thanks.
