After ordering the Pom from Don Paine, I never considered that 4 month could go by so slowly. #This is worse than the week before Christmas as a child. #Plus, I still have more than 2.5 months to go. #On the positive side, I have had the chance to run all the ideas I have had through the Cafe, with most going the way of the Edsel. #I guess this is a lesson in delayed gratification. #Man, I suck at it though. #But, the stimulation has really got me working on my playing. #I find that I am sneeking additional five minutes here and there and that my practice sessions are getting more focused. #That I look forward to asking a question or looking in past threads for more info. #To sum it up, thanks to the cafe. #First, for getting me to order from Don. #I would never have been stimulated with the ideas to get another mando without the Cafe. #Second, that you have worked through all the concepts with me, and I know am pretty close to knowing what I will say with Don when we speak. Third, thanks to you, I will trust my builder. #Fourth, you continue to stimulate me to get better at playing. #Thank you cafe. #I will be poor financially, but I am so much richer.

Hang in there brother... you're not even to the really painful part yet. That last mile's a beeyatch! You're not alone... and many of us have been through this more than once!

It's worth it.

I remember checking my email daily waiting for that one from Don saying my time was up and he was starting on my A2. The only thing better than hearing the work had begun, was watching the mail truck pull up in front of the house and see the mail carrier get out w/ that magical rectangular box. Nothing like it! Talk about deferred gratification - good luck and enjoy the process.

Considering the wait on Dude's, Gilchrist's, or even Will Kimble's lists, 4 months is a baby step. Will be there before you know it.

Heck, I've been waiting on a freakin' calton CASE since August! Patience is a virtue they say, but sometimes it is not easy.

When considering what maker to buy from, two very respected builders recommended by Cafe members had a 2.5 year wait. I guess I am old enough that 2.5 years was simply too much for me to handle. Would be like going through more than 2 Christmass and 2 birthdays getting coal.

Tony... I know of what you speak...
My wait should be up next week... hang in there... it will be worth it, no doubt.

As with pregnancy, the last month is the longest half.

I feel your pain. . . . I have an F-4 on order from Bob Schneider (another 6 weeks to go +/-) and an F-5 on order from Larry Muth (another year or so to go). When I ordered the Muth the wait was 2 years. I guess it gives me time to practice and save - ha.

I'm waiting right there with you. I think mine should be done in April or May. It's my first custom mandolin as well. We probably talked to a lot of the same builders. I was happy with a 4-6 month wait. But 2-3 years? Tht would drive me crazy. I guess we're too used to instant gratification these days.

Ordering mandolins is best done in the same manner as making wine. If you start a new batch every six months or so, you may have an initial wait at the start-up, but you will be taken care of at predictable intervals thereafter. So just order several, with expected delivery dates a few months apart, and just keep doing that. You will end up flat broke, but very happy. Kinda like the French.
