A bought a Breedlove mandolin a few weeks back and it just won't stay in tune. #I can tune the A strings and play only about 20 notes on that pair of strings before they go out of tune. #One string tends to go flat, and the other tends to stay put - or go sharp. #I have Schaler tuners, so I don't think its the tuners. #I've changed strings, stretched 'em out good (for 3 weeks) and still this thing won't stay in tune.

I had a guy at the music store where I bought it try to set it up. #He said the bridge was in the wrong place and he moved it. #That helped with overall intonation, but the string's just go out of tune SO FAST.

I'd like to take it to someone who really knows mandolins to see if it is a problem that can be resolved easily.

I bought the mandolin new and its registered with Breedlove. #Would this be covered under warranty if a good tech can't fix it?

That's really weird......the one that goes flat consistently sounds more like a string wrapping problem if you're sure it's not the tuner.....but if you're buying a Breedlove, I assume you know how to "properly" wrap your strings.

Sim Daley is a tried, true, trusted name in the Mando setup/repair/builder business......give him a holler!!

Yup, Sim is the man when it comes to repair and set-up in the Nashville area. He's at 615-876-3741.

You can bring it to the Valley Arts store on Church Street across from NES. Dave Harvey is the best in the business and he's there every day. Could be a string problem, but more likely a nut problem. May just need the nut cut properly for the strings you like to use. Anyway, Sim is good and Dave is too.

I don't know how he compares to these other guys, but Jon LeVan (I believe that's his name) did a good set-up on my mandolin (before I destroyed it).

You should really contact Breedlove before going to anyone tho. They may want you to send it to them if it's under warenty, or they may have a deal with a specific tech.

I've had the same problem with about three other brands of mandolins. The thing that clues me in is the fact that it's your "A" strings giving you the problem. In all of my mandolins, the culprit was the nut slots were sticking. Sometimes, the "A" strings are slightly larger than the nut slot, as in the case of the J-75 strings. Sometimes you can just grind some pencil lead into the slot to lubricate it, but the best solution is to size the slots correctly for the string.

Dave Harvey at Valley Arts works on Doyle Lawson's ax....so I have been told. I have also been told the same about Sim Daley. Take your pick I guess!

Well, the dealer I bought my Breedlove from said they'd pay to have Greg at The Classic Ax (on music row) set up the mando for me (I bought it just a few weeks ago and the intonation was out the it wouldn't stay in tune). Since it was free, I thought I'd give it a try.

WOW! What a great job he did. Lowered the action, intonation is darn near perfect, and it plays smooth as butter.

So, I'd add Greg at The Classic Ax (http://www.classicax.com/) to your list of good mando set up techs in Nashville.

Yeah Greg at Classic AX is the best. He sets up, mods and repairs all my gear. He is authorized by Gibson, Martin, Ovation, everybody. Right on 16th Ave too.

Larry Cordle recommended Dave Harvey to me. Yes, Dave is the Man. He was great at returning calls, and getting the work done despite the back log of instruments he had when first getting started at Valley Arts.

Actually Dave started doing work for me back when he was at the Violin Shoppe in BNA. Gibson is lucky to have him, no doubt! (great picker as well)
