Anyone here own a Prucha? I've heard good things about this builder but never played one. I'm thinking of ordering one (an A, from Greg Boyd, of course) to upgrade my "go anywhere" mandolin from a Breedlove Quartz.

Any comments here would be helpful - thanks in advance.

I recently played the ones at Gregs and they are nice mandolins. He had a varnish F that a really great mandolin. I think you will be pleased. They have a midrangey, stringy sound, in a good way, and are usually very open from the start.

I've never been near one, but I found a picture of one this morning that really caught my eye. I've never seen a bi-color binding like this before and I love it! If I ever have a mandolin built, that's what it's gonna have. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I got one of the Matte finished A styles off the classifieds here back in June or so. I'd say go for it absolutely. I've got a mando on order from a small builder, but I'll definately keep the Prucha when I get the other. I was at Greg Boyd's a while back and played the Prucha Matte A's vs the Collings MT's and for what it's worth, I liked the Pruchas better. And the higher end Pruchas were killer.

I think the Prucha A is a good way to go if you are going to keep and without upgrade in the near future. The MT's are a different sounding mandolin more rich as the Prucha more vibrant.Prucha wood is great, mostly real European Spruce Tops whis is another plus.

As a new owner of a 2005 A-5 Prucha it is hard for me not to go overboard on the qualtiy of these mandolins. #Mine has had two years now to open up and it is very different from a new one that hasn't. I've had mine since november, and as is typical, I'm always A/B with other manolins, the latest being a Gibson F-5L. #No contest to my ear. #
The Prucha has a livlier, deeper, richer, etc., tone than any mandolin I've had the opportunity to compare. #There were other Prucha's in the shop (Greg Boyd's) at the time of my purchase, but they were all new and hadn't opened up yet. #There were also three Givens A models, a Collings MT Blaktop, and various other makes and models from good builders. #
I can honestly say that for my ear, I left with the best sounding mandolin he had available at the time.
The craftmanship is incredible also!
Obviously, I would recommend you proceed with a Prucha.
Now, if I can just learn to play mine!

People love these mandolins! However know it likely will be a keeper because they don't seem to have much resale value.
