For anyone who might like to see a documentary on Steve Earle, it will be on World Link TV tonight at 8:00pm EST. I saw part of it last night and will watch what I missed tonight. Sorry this is such short notice.

Yes, I saw and taped it on Sat. evening. Actaully, it's being shown again right now, but with WorldLink, it'll be aired many times over the next few months.

(btw, if you happen to save jpgs of this nature, there's a photo of Earle playing a mando at the link above.)

In the documentary, there's quite a bit of concert footage. I thought the long (solo mandolin)Irishy-sounding instrumental intro which prededed "Copperhead Road" was quite good, as was the rhythm mando on "Copperhead Road". I'm making a point of saying this because it might not be mentioned otherwise. He played the mandolin as a total instrument rather than one for generating single line lead passages. #Really fat/full sound which stood on its own (intro) and drove the band (song). He did a real good job and this is an example of the alternative mando thinking one finds when someone who primarily plays a different instrument picks one up.

Some might complain that it wouldn't have been what Ronnie M would have played (had he been onstage in the band), but then again, RMcC would never have thought up what Earle played. Sorta like when both Albert Lee and Ricky Skaggs were playing for Emmylou and you might hear complaints like"Why isn't the real mandolin player taking the mandolin solo on the record instead of that guitar-playing interloper?"

PS: Did you watch the short Rumanian film that followed the documentary? #Lots of scenes at a Rumanian party with band (including "Tequila" on fiddle & accordion)! And then after some commericals, there was a really great music video of a female Tibetan singer. Also, immediately preceding the Earle documentary, there's a music video of a female Uzbek singer which I've got to record.

Mandocrucian,
I watched part of the Steve Earle documentary again this morning. He is such a treasure. I've been on a Steve Earl kick for the last few weeks. He is so talented.

I saw a show the next day about the Nordic Link Festival from Minneapolis . That was GREAT I don't know if thats the same one your talking about but it sounds like it.. If the programing was like that all the time I'd never watch anything else. I only saw part of the Nordic Link Festival but I'll try to catch the whole thing soon. I'll have to check out the website for the schedule.
