Going to Sheffield on the 22nd - hope they're as good as last time; not particularly impressed by their last recorded offerings but their live show may be different

Me too! I'm catching the Dublin Show next week, I find some of their material a little bit cheesy but They are great musicians and I'm really looking forward to the gig!

We have Alison Brown coming to Dublin too, is she touring the UK?

I'll be at the gig on the 27th. Their live show is far superior to their recordings (and I say that as a huge fan of their CDs, so that's really saying something!) so don't worry about being disappointed.

Great that they're playing here in Ireland as well as the UK. Going to see them in Galway.

Hello Padraig, nice to see a fellow Irishman on this site http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The Roisin Dubh (Spelling?) is a lovely intimate venue to see NC. In Dublin it's in the POD which I would normally associate with Techno and Ravers http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Well excited about hearing and seeing Chris Thile's playing,

I was thinking it would be nice to get a lesson from him while he's in town but it's not easy to get in touch with him and he's probably a bit busy with tour schedule. Just a thought http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hi Aran, sorry I didn't make it to the friday night bluegrass session last month - maybe next time. Looks like Alison Brown is playing Dublin + 2 nights in Glasgow.

Hi Ray, Cool see you next time round - I have babysitting duties for the next 6 Fridays so I'm out of the loop for a while, Yeah I've been listening to one of Alison Browns albums and it's excellent so I will try and catch her gig!! There's a lot going on in Ireland at the moment. Go to www.bluegrassireland.blogspot.com for all the latest on whats going on. I'm afraid that kids and finances mean I can't go to everything!! Such is life http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You can sing that one, Aran! The NC gig plus babysitter puts a big hole in the entertainment budget for February. Should be very well worth it, though.

My only fear is that they'll pick up a few Irish traditional tunes while they're here and then we'll have a whole "Nickel Creek ain't Irish Traditional" controversy on our hands to match the one you Bluegrassers have had.

I can see it all now...

...Some well-meaning post that goes something like "I never liked Irish music until I heard NC. Now I love it - they're, like, the best Irish traditional musicians in the world!". I see the above post and try to reply politely that they're not really Irish traditional at all. Then more posters start saying I'm narrow-minded and anyway Irish music would be dead without NC. Then I try to point out that I really like NC and think they're great musicians and all that, but that even NC themselves would deny that they're Irish traditional. Then someone uses the word "Celtic". Then it really gets silly...

If that happens in Dublin just think what might happen in Sheffield!

There is a saying in those parts which goes - "You can always tell a Yorkshireman - but you can't tell him much."

Ray and Matt I see you are both in Scotland!!

Alison Brown and on another night Crooked Still are apparently playing in your neck of the woods. I'm seeing Crooked Still tonight and Alison Brown on Sunday in Dublin, reasonably priced tickets made this possible! Not mandolin orientated but could be good!! Are you guys going to see them in Scotland?? I'll let you know how I got on!

No Aran, I'm in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England (more or less in the middle). Scotland is a 4/5 hour drive away.

Ah right Ray, Sorry got that one wrong!!

Saw Crooked Still and they were great!

Their lead singer is really rather pretty too, it's always a bonus when watching a band to have some eye candy!! Oh and she can sing too. I didn't realise till this morning she sings with the wayfaring strangers, who I am quite keen on.

Anyway nothing but good to say about Crooked Still, an unusual sound played with energy and skill. Yep top marks.

But no mandolins http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

From Scott Adams' "Dilbert Blog" (http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/) on the subject of "Traditional"

Traditional Values

Have you ever wondered why some people brag about their “traditional” values when they obviously mean “superior”? It’s because “traditional” is a more flexible word. It implies an inherent goodness without the need to defend the details. I plan to start using “traditional” as my adjective of choice in all sorts of contexts.

Parent: “Here’s a picture of my family.”

Me: “That’s one traditional looking family!”

Or

Fiancee: “Which blouse do you like better?”

Me: “I’d have to go with the traditional one.”

Or

Economist: “Do you support higher interest rates to fend off inflation or would you prefer a more pro-growth policy?”

Me: “Um, which one is more traditional?”

I also wonder how long you need to age a ###### set of values before they became desirable via the process of traditionalization. If it’s not too long, I recommend that we make an investment in the future and start incubating some future values now. For example, I think our grandsons would thank us for making happy endings the traditional way to end both movies and massages. That’s just one example. I’m sure there are other bad values that need some traditionalization too.

Here's an old rant from me about traditional music (http://www.celticmusic.com/magazine/articles/innovation_tradition.shtml) too, just to add even more shouts of "rubbish" from the back bench http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Trevor: Let me know when you find out where Georges Church is cause I'm sending my oldest daughter there as she will be in Brighton that week and I reckon seeing Chris Thile might inspire her mandolin playing a bit!!
Cheers Aran

Dan: I like the traditional thing!! I think I might have a use for that in life, Cheers

St Georges Church appears to be pretty much on the same road as your shop, Trevor - see the churches website (http://www.stgeorges-church.org/).

Looks like a strange venue for them. I'll be seeing them at the Fleece in Bristol, a tiny pub with a capacity of around 300 - the atmosphere will be perfect. I saw them there a couple of years ago and it was the very reason I took up the mandolin. Absolutely awesome.

Hope it was clear to all and sundry that I was just fooling around in my post about NC and Irish traditional music...I'd be absolutely delighted to hear them tackle a few Irish tunes.

Trevor I got Lily's tickets, and spoke to her and she reminded me that she met you briefly last October and would definately say hello.

Also if she keeps up with the practicing this year I will be knocking on your door for her Mando upgrade.

And very nice it will be for you folks to see Nickel Creek.

But why do all of the artists skip over Newcastle http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

They seem to get as far as Yorkshire somewhere like Leeds or Shefield and then voooom up to Edinburgh or Glasgow they Woooooosh over to Ireland.

Its two years almost to the day since I saw Tim O'brien.

Kate Rusby was great back in November with John Mc playing quite a bit of tenor guitar but we need Nickel Creek and Tim O'Brien at least once a year.
