I just came across a couple of videos of Dan here (click) (http://www.celticmusic.com/dan/news.html) (under June 12, 2004). Absolutely heartbreaking technique.
I like play more or less the same way hitting a lot of drones and chords, but my sound never comes out this nice! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Well that was depressing http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I loved the drones though because I have experimented with them as well. Does Dan use a plectrum? It doesn't look like it, unless its a subtle thumb plectrum.

No reason to weep unless it's with joy...just keep playing and you'll be making videos, cd's whatever your heart desires! Think, I can! not I can't...

Hey, I use the same picks Dan does and I hold them the same way. So why does it sound different? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Boy I've got some tempo problems in those, eek.

I noticed those "tempo problems", but dismissed them as "showing off speed". http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Go with that.

WOW! I hadn't seen/heard those videos either... that Midnight/Bonaparte's medley is amazing. Midnight On The Water is one of my all time favorite tunes to play on Fiddle or Mando and the ringing drones are perfect. I'm still unclear on the pick thing; the link to the pick-page shows a Clayton Ultem pick, but it looks like a standard triangle pick rather than a finger pick or thumb pick (like for banjo). The video shows some strumming/picking with the thumb separately from the index finger... so is the pick SuperGlued to the 1st knuckle on the index finger? Howzat work? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Great technique, Dan... I confess I don't have Shatter The Calm, but from what I've read and heard it's one I want to order.
Paul Doubek
Someone told me I did that with the pick and I never used to believe it, but now I see it happen.. I just let go with the thumb when I'm clear of the strings somtimes. Hard to explain, just kinda relaxed completely unless the pick is on the strings and I need to hold it, even then the grip is pretty light (except during triplets).
Ever thumb-slap a bass? Same basic feeling, though I hold on at the last second. The pick pretty much stays there and makes tiny dents in my 1st finger to stay in place.
Tempo.. hmm.. just honest-to-goodness tempo problems, I'm afraid http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif If it were proper showing off, it'd be faster and have no mistakes!
In my defense, I did those under time pressure without reshooting. Hard to work the camera etc alone. Somewhere I think I have more polished ones I did but those ones I could find, I guess! Thanks for all the nice compliments
By the way.. the mandolin is tuned DDAD in the midnight on the water/bonaparte's cut. Impossible otherwise, especially the low D ! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Faster? I thought you tore it up on Bonaparte's, and the tempo on Midnight was about perfect... it would be a crime to speed that tune up! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I meant to ask about the tuning... I thought it sounded like you dropped the 4th string. I've never played it that way, although the Fiddler's Fakebook suggests it. The tuning pegs on my fiddle don't always grab as well as they should, but if I leave it alone it stays pretty well in tune so I usually don't mess with it.

Yeah Dan. I tried it a long time ago with GDAE tuning and (obviously) could not maintain the low D drone the whole time. Did you tune the G strings down then? Did you have to switch strings for that? Very clever tuning.
Avi
It's not my invention, old trick on a fiddle. Drop your G down to a C# (it'll creep up a little), then your top E to a D.. adjust your strumming a bit to be a lighter touch.. not too hard once you fiddle with it a bit. One of my favorite tests on a mandolin.
That Steve Smith mando in the video is the best one I ever tried for that tuning..

Dan, any chance of getting the sheet music for your "chorded" version of "midnight on the water" from that video? It's an amazing arrangement, and the tempo would make it accessible to most (including me!!!) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

These are great clips and an excellent educational tool. Thanks Dan for making these available. I wonder if anyone knows if there are any other of these type clips that can be downloaded legally and freely.
Hmm, I actually taped a couple lessons but never did the voice-over.. I mumble pretty badly, need a good radio voice for it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'll find them and post in a couple days
Note that if you are in Southern California, I'm teaching a class on Irish ornamentation & style for bluegrass mandolin players at supergrass. Probably the only class in my life that I'll teach on a Loar http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Well Geez, Dan.... that's just not fair at all.

Is it just me or does the Bonaparte's Retreat section sound a LOT like Aaron Copeland? Sounds like "Rodeo," otherwise known as the "Beef: It's What's For Dinner" commercial music!
BTW, I loved it!

Aaron Copland based several of his compositions on American folk music. He was and is my favorite American composer. And yep - that's the same melody - pretty cool!!

dan, that was awesome
and both af those mandolins sound great. what make is the F?
The F is my recently-sold-to-another-cafe-member Lebeda F5 Premium Plus. Great bang for the buck!
I was offline this weekend getting the new house put together, maybe DSL by the weekend.. The mando class is at Supergrass, I believe Sat Feb 4th.
Nothing particularly special about the Midnight on the Water setting.. just using the open drones a lot! Thanks for the nice words

John, you need to open these with the almighty VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Flat out the best video player on any platform, free, efficient, fast.

Dan great vids. Did you ever work out a on line lesson? I seem to remember some one trying to do that and thought it was you.

Dan,
What are the chances of you producing an instructional DVD? Maybe intermediate level +, Celtic ornamentation, rhythm, and so on? There certainly seems to be a market...
